Chapter Ten Mass Is the Engine Why the heaviest ship wins

For a century, propulsion engineering has been built on a single fear: mass.

Mass is burden. Mass is inertia. Mass is the thing you must fight.

Every launch vehicle ever built is a monument to escaping its own weight. Stack fuel under payload. Burn violently. Discard stages like shedding skin. Arrive mostly empty.

This is not elegance. It is survival inside the wrong paradigm.

Velocity change grows logarithmically with mass ratio. That logarithm is the cage.
