Part one — Glenda’s homecoming surprise

“Who the —? I’ll never get the stain out of the rug,” she murmured to herself. The corpse wasn’t going to hear her.

It took her a minute to settle down. She called the cops on her cellphone — it was too late for an ambulance.

When they arrived, the reality of her situation had already sunk in.

The lead detective looked at her with an expression that told Glenda he’d already made up his mind.

“Glenda Maynard.” He wrote her name down slowly. “You claim not to know the deceased.”

“I haven’t a clue who he is.”

“He must’ve had a key. Did you give it to him?”

“I told you, I’ve never seen him before.” Was the cop trying to railroad her?

“What’s your job?” the detective asked.

“I’m — ” For once, Glenda wasn’t sure what to say. Perhaps he already knew. “I’m an escort.”

The detective smirked. “Maybe the poor sap wanted his money back.”

“He’s not a client and never has been.” The asshole cop was getting to her.

The detective flipped through the dead man’s wallet and produced a card. “Interesting.” He looked at Glenda, still smirking.

She said nothing.

“How come this guy you claim not to know has your calling card?”

“Lots of guys have my cards. It’s a red herring.”

“It’s enough for me to run you downtown.”

“You can’t.” Glenda felt a stab of fear. The cops already had it in for her.

“You’ll find that I can, lady.

“I’ve done nothing.”

“But some poor sucker’s got your card and is dead on a rug in your flat. That’s enough for me.”

“I want my lawyer.”

“You can call them when we get to the station.”

The cop’s smug expression warned Glenda he’d already decided her guilt.
