“A Failed System?: NASU Strike Impact on Students Life”

On May 6th 2026, University of Ibadan students engaged in protest which lead to temporarily suspension of academic activities.The protest resulted from the indirect impact of the ongoing NASU strike which led to power outage and unavailability of water in halls of residence and had deprived students of basic amenities making their life unbearable.

As a result, academic activities were put on hold, as the Students’ Union emphasized that continuing lectures under such harsh conditions would have been both impractical and harmful to students’ well-being. The situation reflected the heavy dependence of the university system on non-academic staff, whose absence had crippled basic operations, when essential services completely broke down it shows how failure in infrastructure management can lead to unrest and disruption in academic activities.

Tension escalated further when students from Independence Hall (Indy) and Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall (ZIK) staged protests across campus. Their actions highlighted the urgent reality that learning could not continue without access to basic amenities.The protest gained momentum as students expressed frustration over deteriorating living conditions. Water supply had become nearly nonexistent, electricity was unreliable, and hostel maintenance had broken down completely. The students moved through lecture halls and hostels chanting “No water, no class,” while asking fellow students and lecturers to vacate classrooms.

In response, the school management provided a temporary relief by the generation of electricity supply via generator for a few hours in all halls of residence. This short-term measure eventually paved the way for the restoration of stable power supply across the entire campus, bringing a much-needed sense of relief to students.

An Emergency Congress was later held, where student representatives engaged with the university management. According to the Students’ Union President, several resolutions were reached. Jaja Hall was reopened, assurances were also given regarding the restoration of electricity on campus and progress was made toward the approval of camp gas, expected within two weeks.

Following these developments, it was announced that academic activities would resume the next day, and this was put into action, pending further resolutions. Students were urged to remain calm and cooperative as efforts continued to stabilize the situation.

Overall, the incident demonstrated the direct impact of the NASU strike on student welfare and academic stability. It highlighted how recurring industrial actions continue to disrupt the educational system, raising serious concerns about the future of higher education in Nigeria.
