Embracing New Connections Across Cultures
When we moved from our native country, it became tough for anyone to get introduced to new people due to cultural and language differences. The beginning part was ok for everyone, when we were struggling with a new set-up of career, and adopting the environment. But as time went on, we realized how important it was to build connections outside of work and the immediate community. We wanted to share our experiences, learn new perspectives, and grow through meaningful friendships.

One of the most memorable moments during time in Finland was a “Friendship Match” event organized by Ulla on February 14th. In Finland, this day isn’t just about love — it’s also about celebrating friendship. Through this event, we two were matched with a wonderful Finnish family, and what started as a simple introduction has blossomed into a lasting friendship that has continued for over four years. Even though we sometimes go months without seeing each other, every meeting feels warm and meaningful. It’s often said that making friends in Finland can be tough, but my experience has shown that once those connections are made, they can last a lifetime.
Now, as I’ve moved to the U.S. for my post-doctoral studies at Cornell, I’m experiencing a new chapter of cultural adaptation. For the first time, I’m in a place where English is the common language, which has made communication easier. As a post-doc, I’m in this unique space — not quite a senior, but not a junior anymore either. It’s a fresh start, and I’ve been grateful to discover initiatives like the “Co-workers Coffee” program at Cornell, where I get to meet colleagues from different departments and backgrounds. It’s a fantastic way to break the ice, learn about new cultures, and maybe even discover shared interests or hobbies.
Looking back at the past ten years of living abroad, I’m filled with gratitude for the people I’ve met along the way. Each person has given me their time, shared their stories, and helped me grow in ways I couldn’t have imagined. To everyone who has been part of this journey — thank you. Your kindness and openness have made all the difference.
Here’s to building bridges, embracing new connections, and celebrating the beauty of friendship across cultures. ‘’Hyvää Ystävänpäivää kaikille!’’ (Happy Friendship Day to everyone!)
