In recent years, mobile data usage has emerged as a significant driver of digital engagement, socioeconomic development, and communication patterns in Nigeria. With over 220 million people and a rapidly growing digital economy, Nigeria represents one of Africa’s largest and fastest-expanding mobile markets (GSMA, 2023). The increasing penetration of smartphones, the proliferation of social media platforms, and the adoption of digital services such as mobile banking, e-commerce, e-learning, and entertainment have contributed to a sharp rise in mobile data consumption across the country (Adeleke & Adebiyi, 2022).
Despite this growth, internet costs in Nigeria remain relatively high compared to many global standards, posing challenges to affordability and inclusivity. Reports by the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) indicate that although data prices have declined over the past decade, they still consume a significant portion of the average Nigerian’s income, causing digital inequality between urban and rural populations (A4AI, 2022). High operational costs for telecom providers such as broadband infrastructure deficits, unreliable power supply, and multiple taxation further influence the cost of internet services (Ndukwe & Aja, 2021).
Moreover, mobile network operators (MNOs) continue to struggle with issues related to bandwidth, network congestion, and inconsistent service quality, which affect user experience despite rising data expenditures (NCC, 2021). As Nigeria aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration and deepen digital inclusion under the National Broadband Plan 2020–2025, understanding the dynamics of mobile data usage and internet pricing becomes crucial for policymakers, telecom operators, and researchers (Federal Ministry of Communications & Digital Economy, 2020).
This study therefore examines the patterns, determinants, and implications of mobile data usage and internet costs in Nigeria, with a view to identifying gaps, challenges, and opportunities for enhancing affordability, accessibility, and overall digital transformation.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the expansion of Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, mobile data remains relatively expensive, and service quality is often inconsistent. Many Nigerians struggle to afford sufficient internet access for work, education, and daily communication, especially in rural and low-income communities. The A4AI (2022) reports that the cost of 1GB of mobile data still exceeds the UN-recommended threshold of 2% of average monthly income for millions of Nigerian users.
Moreover, network congestion, slow broadband speed, and infrastructural weaknesses undermine user experience and limit effective data utilization (NCC, 2021). These problems persist despite government initiatives such as the National Broadband Plan (2020–2025). There is therefore a need to investigate the factors influencing mobile data usage patterns and the underlying causes of high internet costs in Nigeria. Without such understanding, achieving widespread digital inclusion remains difficult.
OBJECTIVES

To identify the most preferred mobile network providers in Nigeria and the reason behind users’ choice.

RESULTS/FINDINGS

DEMOGRAPHIC FACTORS AFFECTING DATA CONSUMPTION
AGE

The largest proportion of respondents falls within the 18–24 age group (60 respondents), followed by 25–34 (42 respondents). The numbers steadily decline as age increases, with only 5 respondents aged 55 and above.
This distribution indicates that the survey sample is predominantly young, with most participants below 35 years of age. This suggests that younger individuals are the most active mobile data users or the most reachable audience for digital surveys.
GENDER

The data shows that females (71 respondents) slightly outnumber males (63 respondents) in the survey, while 9 respondents chose not to disclose their gender.
The gender distribution is relatively balanced, with a slight female dominance. This balance suggests that the responses provide a fairly representative view of both male and female perspectives on mobile data usage.
EDUCATION QUALIFICATION

The majority of respondents, 78 individuals (the largest group), hold a Bachelor’s degree, followed by 27 respondents with Postgraduate qualifications. Smaller portions possess Diplomas (19) and Secondary education (16), while 3 respondents fall under the “Others” category.
The data reveals that most participants are highly educated, with over 70% holding at least a Bachelor’s degree. This suggests that the respondents are likely to be digitally literate and well-informed about mobile data usage and internet services.
NETWORK COVERAGE

Most respondents rated their network coverage as Good (52 respondents), followed by Fair (36) and Excellent (35). Only 20 respondents described their network coverage as Poor.
The results suggest that a majority of users (around 65%) are generally satisfied with their network coverage, rating it as Good or Excellent. However, a significant minority (approximately one-third) still experience Fair or Poor coverage, indicating uneven service quality across different areas.
MONTHLY INCOME

The largest group of respondents (48 individuals) earn between ₦50,000 and ₦99,999 monthly. Equal numbers (38 respondents each) fall within the ₦100,000–₦199,999 and Below ₦50,000 categories, while only 19 respondents earn ₦200,000 or more per month.
The data indicates that most respondents fall within the lower- to middle-income bracket, with relatively few earning above ₦200,000. This suggests that affordability is likely a significant factor influencing mobile data purchasing behavior.
PATTERNS OF MOBILE DATA USAGE AMONG NIGERIANS
DATA USAGE

A majority of respondents (88 individuals) use mobile data daily, while 24 use it weekly, 20 use it occasionally, and only 11 use it rarely.
The data clearly shows that mobile data usage is an integral part of daily life for most respondents. The high proportion of daily users suggests that internet connectivity plays a crucial role in communication, work, education, and entertainment.
DATA ACTIVITY

A clear majority of respondents (71 individuals) identified social media as the main activity consuming most of their mobile data. This is followed by online learning (29) and video streaming (22), while work/business (16) and others (5) account for smaller portions.
The data shows that social media is the dominant driver of mobile data consumption, reflecting the popularity of platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, TikTok, and X (Twitter) among users. The significant number of respondents citing online learning and streaming also suggests that educational and entertainment content are major contributors to overall data use.
DAILY DATA HOURS

The largest group of respondents (76 individuals) use mobile data for more than 6 hours daily, followed by 32 respondents who use it for 4–6 hours. Fewer respondents (20) use data for 1–3 hours, and only 15 spend less than 1 hour per day online.
The findings reveal that a majority of respondents (about 70%) are heavy mobile data users, spending at least 4 hours or more online daily. This suggests that mobile internet has become a central part of daily activities, such as social media use, streaming, remote work, and online learning.
MONTHLY DATA USAGE

Most respondents (54 individuals) consume between 11–30GB of data monthly, while 36 respondents use above 30GB, showing a strong trend toward high data usage. 30 respondents use 1–10GB, and 22 respondents consume below 1GB per month.
This indicate that a large majority (around 75%) are moderate to heavy data users, consuming over 10GB monthly. This pattern aligns with earlier findings showing frequent and prolonged daily internet use, suggesting that streaming, social media, and remote activities contribute significantly to high data consumption.
DATA PURCHASE FREQUENCY

Most respondents purchase mobile data weekly (54), followed by daily (33). Fewer users buy data biweekly (29) or monthly (27). This indicates that users prefer shorter-term data plans, likely to maintain flexibility or manage costs. Weekly data plans are the most popular, suggesting that mobile users value frequent, manageable top-ups over long-term plans. Data service providers could focus on enhancing weekly plan offerings, promotions, or bundles to match user behavior.
MAIN DEVICE

A large majority of respondents (94 individuals) primarily use smartphones to access mobile data. Tablets (26) and laptops (18) are used by smaller groups, while 5 respondents indicated other devices.
The data clearly indicates that smartphones are the dominant medium for mobile internet access, emphasizing their central role in digital connectivity. The relatively smaller use of tablets and laptops suggests that most respondents depend on mobile-friendly and portable devices for everyday online activities.
PEAK USAGE TIME

The data shows that mobile data usage peaks during the evening (41) and night (40), while usage is lower in the morning (29) and slightly higher in the afternoon (33). This indicates that most people prefer using mobile data during their leisure or free hours, likely after work, school, or daily activities. Mobile data consumption is highest during the evening and night, suggesting that digital content, streaming, social media, and online activities are more active during these hours. Service providers and app developers could leverage this trend to target promotions, optimize network performance, or schedule updates during peak usage times.
PREFERRED MOBILE NETWORK PROVIDERS IN NIGERIA
NETWORK PROVIDER

MTN is the most widely used mobile network among respondents, with 70 users, more than double the number for Airtel and Glo. 9mobile has the least users at 13. This indicates a strong preference for MTN, likely due to better network coverage, reliability, or pricing. MTN dominates as the preferred mobile network provider among respondents, suggesting that marketing strategies, promotions, and network expansion efforts by MTN resonate well with users. Other providers may need to improve their service quality or offer competitive plans to increase adoption.
PROVIDER DURATION

Most respondents have been using their current network provider for 4–6 years (47), followed by 1–3 years (40). Fewer users are relatively new (less than 1 year — 20) or very long-term users (more than 6 years — 36). This indicates that many users maintain their network for several years, showing a balance of loyalty and some flexibility to switch providers over time. Users tend to stick with their mobile network provider for multiple years, with the largest group using their provider for 4–6 years. This suggests moderate customer loyalty, but providers should still focus on retention strategies and service improvements to prevent churn, especially among newer users.
DATA PRICING RATING

Most respondents consider their current provider’s data pricing to be affordable (48), closely followed by those who find it expensive (47). Fewer respondents view it as very affordable (27) or very expensive (21). This indicates a mixed perception of data pricing, with nearly equal proportions finding it affordable or costly. While a significant number of users find data pricing manageable, a nearly equal number perceive it as expensive. Providers should balance pricing strategies and offer value-for-money plans to maintain user satisfaction and reduce churn.
PROVIDER REASON

The main reason respondents choose their mobile network provider is network coverage (55), followed by better data pricing (38) and data speed (30). Fewer users prioritize customer service (13) or promotions (7). This shows that reliability and affordability are the top factors influencing provider choice. Network coverage is the primary factor driving provider selection, suggesting that users prioritize consistent connectivity over other features. Providers aiming to attract or retain customers should focus on expanding coverage and offering competitive pricing and fast data services.
CHALLENGES FACED BY NIGERIANS IN ACCESSING AFFORDABLE AND RELIABLE MOBILE INTERNET
POOR CONNECTIVITY

A large majority of respondents (113 out of 143) have experienced poor internet connectivity in their area, while only a small portion (30 respondents) have not. This highlights that network reliability is a significant issue for most users.
Poor internet connectivity is a common problem, affecting the majority of users. Network providers should prioritize infrastructure improvements and coverage expansion to enhance user experience and reduce dissatisfaction.
OUTAGE FREQUENCY

Most respondents experience network outages occasionally (49) or very often (44), while fewer report rarely (38) or never (11) experiencing downtime. This indicates that network reliability is a concern for a significant portion of users.
Frequent network outages affect a large number of users, highlighting the need for providers to invest in stable and reliable network infrastructure. Minimizing downtime could improve customer satisfaction and retention.
INTERNET CHALLNEGE

The biggest challenge for most respondents is high cost of mobile internet (68), followed by poor coverage (26) and slow speed (22). Fewer users face issues with limited bundles or other challenges. This shows that affordability is the primary concern for users, with network performance also playing a role. High cost is the main barrier to mobile internet usage, while coverage and speed remain important secondary concerns. Mobile network providers could focus on offering cost-effective plans, improving coverage, and enhancing network speed to address users’ key challenges.
DATA AFFORDABILITY

Most respondents find data plans expensive (57), followed by very expensive (30). Fewer respondents consider them affordable (32) or very affordable (23). This indicates that the majority perceive mobile data plans in Nigeria as costly. Data affordability is a major concern for users, with nearly two-thirds considering plans expensive or very expensive. Network providers may need to introduce more competitively priced packages or flexible plans to make mobile internet more accessible and improve user satisfaction.
REDUCED USE COST

A majority of respondents (101 out of 141) have reduced their internet usage because of high data costs, while a smaller portion (40 respondents) have not. This emphasizes that cost directly affects user behavior and data consumption.
High data costs are significantly impacting internet usage, leading many users to cut back on consumption. Network providers should consider introducing affordable data plans, flexible bundles, or promotions to prevent reduced usage and retain customer engagement.
INFLUENCE OF PROMOTIONAL OFFERS AND BONUSES ON DATA CONSUMPTION HABITS
PROMO BONUS

Slightly less than half of respondents report that their mobile provider offers promotional data bonuses (60), while a significant number say No (53) or are Not sure (30). This suggests that promotional offers are either not widely available or not effectively communicated to users.
Promotional data bonuses are not consistently reaching or being noticed by users. Providers could improve marketing and awareness of these promotions to enhance perceived value and encourage customer loyalty.
BONUS DATA USAGE

Usage of bonus data is fairly distributed: most respondents use it occasionally (42) or very often (41), while fewer use it rarely (39) or never (20). This shows that bonus data is actively utilized by a significant portion of users, though not universally.
Bonus data is an important supplement to users’ main data bundles, with many taking advantage of it regularly. Mobile providers can leverage this behavior by promoting bonus data offers and creating plans that incentivize frequent use, which could increase engagement and satisfaction.
PROMO INFLUENCE

Promotional offers have a notable impact on respondents’ choice of data plans. The largest group (50) says promotions strongly influence their choice, while a smaller number (13) say promotions have no influence. Others are in between, indicating moderate influence.
Promotional offers are an effective tool in guiding users’ data plan choices, with a majority of respondents influenced at least somewhat. Mobile providers can leverage promotions strategically to attract new customers and retain existing ones.
PROMO TYPE

The most attractive type of promotion for respondents is double data (70), followed by social media packs (30) and free night browsing (24). Weekly bonuses (16) are the least appealing. This indicates that users highly value promotions that give them more usable data, especially for regular internet activities. Double data promotions are the most effective in attracting users, suggesting that providers should prioritize offers that maximize data volume over time. - Improve Network Infrastructure Mobile network operators should invest in upgrading and expanding network infrastructure to reduce outages, improve coverage in underserved areas, and enhance overall connection speed and reliability.
- Introduce More Affordable Data Plans Providers should design cost-effective and flexible data packages that cater to low- and middle-income users, who make up the majority of mobile data consumers.
- Enhance Transparency and Communication on Promotions Network providers should improve awareness and communication of promotional offers, ensuring customers clearly understand available bonuses and how to access them.
- Promote Fair Competition Among Network Providers Regulatory bodies such as NCC should enforce fair pricing policies and encourage competition to help lower data costs and improve service quality.
