Joanne Rowling was born on July 31, 1965, in the small town of Yate. Ever since she was a little girl, lost in books and scribbling out tales, storytelling felt like home to her. She studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter; however, writing was always her secret heartbeat.

The idea for Harry Potter came to her on a delayed train in 1990. Just like that, a boy wizard appeared in her imagination — messy hair, glasses, and a lightning-shaped scar.

In the following years, she struggled as a single mother, battling with depression. Trying to maintain her family, she continued to write in coffee shops with her baby daughter beside her.

The author sent her manuscript to twelve different publishing houses, but they all turned it down, because it was too long for children and the topic of magic was not marketable. Ultimately, Bloomsbury took a chance, and the rest is history.

Now, she writes under her name and as Robert Galbraith. Also, she is a renowned philanthropist and supports various charities.

During an interview with Business Insider, J. K. Rowling mentioned “Emma” by Jane Austen as her favorite book. She has stated:

“Jane Austen is my all-time favorite author, and “Emma” is my favorite of Austen’s novels. I read it at least 20 times.” — J. K. Rowling

Emma is a story about adolescent romantic miscommunication. Set in the fictional country village of Highbury and the surrounding estates of Hartfield, Randalls, and Donwell Abbey, it focuses on the relationships of members of these families.

Another adolescent romantic novel by Jane Austen. What else do you need to include in the list?

Take Away

Many times, we forget that our hero writers were simple people once. If you ask the younger generations, thousands will cite a book from Rowling’s Harry Potter series.

Nevertheless, famous authors started just like many of us, finding joy, solace, and happiness through the words of someone else.

“I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! — When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library.”― Jane Austen
