Tech Burnout: Losing Touch in a Digital Age
It was a pleasant evening, and we were all excited for a dinner date with a few close friends. The ambiance was perfect — filled with laughter, playful banter, nostalgia, and of course, good food.
However, something from that evening has been bothering me ever since, and I can’t seem to shake it off. Among our group was a young boy, about 12 years old. We arrived at 7 PM and left around 10 PM, and during those three hours, I noticed something unsettling: the boy was glued to a mobile phone the entire time.
At first, you might wonder why this disturbed me so much. After all, isn’t that the new normal? But let me explain.
During those three hours, he didn’t interact with anyone around him. It was as if he had an invisible barrier preventing him from connecting with real people. His world existed solely on that small screen, and the real humans around him might as well have been invisible.
There were two other kids, a bit younger, who were chatting and playing with each other. Yet, he showed no interest in joining them. He remained fixated on his screen, seemingly uninterested in real-world interactions.
The most alarming part was his lack of normal reflexes. It reminded me of someone with a neurological disability where their reflexes just don’t respond properly. For instance, while he was sitting, the other kids were trying to move past him, but he didn’t even flinch to make space for them. He was so engrossed in his digital world that he failed to acknowledge the real one around him.
This made me question where this digital smartness is leading us. Are we creating a generation that lacks essential human qualities? Children need a free, interactive environment to grow into confident and secure individuals.
The boy I observed doesn’t have any clinical neurological diagnosis. This behavior was purely due to excessive screen addiction, highlighting a disturbing trend.
Isn’t it time we start paying attention to the impact of this digital overload? Our children deserve better. Let’s ensure they grow up with the ability to connect, interact, and thrive in the real world, not just the virtual one.
