THE MOST SINCERE SONG OF SAKANACTION HISTORY [EN]

While it may not be uncommon these days, but has there ever been a rock band of the same generation that was so introspective yet so reluctant to write “love songs”? Sakanaction’s 2019 release, ‘I can’t forget‘(Wasurerarenai no), sent shockwaves through all of UOTAMI(the collective name of Sakanacution funs).

Those in the know might argue this: ‘Wait, aren’t songs like “Omotesando nijyu-roku ji” and “Bach no Senritsu o Yoru ni Kiita Sei Desu” love songs too?’ However, in their previous tracks, romantic elements were always veiled and expressed in a way that implicitly suggests something in these songs. In contrast, this song portrays raw, direct emotions, making it surprisingly honest compared to their past songwriting.

However, it seems open to give another interpretation for this song as well. For example, it could be expressing a farewell to someone special, like a friend or family member, or perhaps singing about their past self and memories of home.

As the opening track of the album ‘834.194’, and considering the album’s concept is ‘contrast between Tokyo and Sapporo(his hometown),’ the most natural interpretation is that the protagonist, who has lived in Tokyo for quite some time, is feeling a sense of melancholy for his hometown.

It’s also hard to hide one’s surprise that the band — which has previously relied heavily on synthesizers to create futuristic tracks incorporating elements of techno and house — has released a sound reminiscent of 1980s city pop. Furthermore, since they even went as far as releasing an 8cm single CD — a rarity these days — everyone was blown away by the promotion. (Ref: ‘I bought 8cm single CD “I can’t forget/Moth”[JA]’)

However, the frontman himself, Ichiro Yamaguchi, reportedly struggled immensely during the songwriting process. There is a well-known anecdote that he finally managed to complete the track after seeking advice from Yuming (Yumi Matsutoya).

I actually consulted Yuming-san about ‘Wasurerarenai no’ back then. I told her, ‘I want to make a pop song.’ And then, she was like, ‘Are you stupid or what?’ in her usual blunt way. But she also told me, ‘Real pop music is something that gets recognized five years down the road. Aren’t you doing exactly that?’ Her words gave me the courage to just go for it, and that’s how I ended up making ‘Wasurerarenai no.’

It was truly surprising to see Sakanaction — a band that has always captivated listeners with their literary expressions — take on such a raw, honest display of emotion. Yet, when we experience the nostalgic melody and the lyrics as one, the scenery of ‘that hometown’ — their absolute starting point — vividly comes to life right before our eyes.

今ではもう珍しくなくなったが、同年代でここまで内省的でありながら、ここまで「恋愛ソング」を作らないロックバンドがいただろうか。そんなサカナクションが2019年にリリースした本作『忘れられないの』 は、全魚民（サカナクションファンの総称）を震撼させた。

詳しい人なら「いやいや、『表参道26時』や『バッハの旋律を夜に聴いたせいです。』も恋愛ソングじゃないの？」と主張するかもしれない。しかし、これまでの楽曲において、恋愛要素はあくまで背景に隠される形で表現されてきた。一方、本作は非常に真っ直ぐな感情が描かれており、これまでのソングライティングと比較しても驚くほど素直なのだ。

しかしながら、一見するとストレートな恋愛ソングのようでありながら、実はそれ以外の解釈もできるように思える。恋愛に限らず、友人や家族など大切な人との別れを重ね合わせることもできれば、あるいは過去の自分や、故郷の思い出について歌っているのかもしれない、と。

本作はアルバム『834.194』のリード曲であり、アルバムの「東京と札幌の対比」というコンセプトと照らし合わせても、上京して随分と経つ主人公が故郷に哀愁を抱いている──という解釈が、最も自然なように思えるのだ。

また、これまでシンセサイザーを多用し、テクノやハウスなどの要素を取り入れた近未来的な楽曲を作ってきた彼らが、このような80年代シティポップを彷彿とさせるサウンドをリリースしたことにも驚きを隠せない。その後、今時珍しい8cmシングルCDまで発売したのだから、そのプロモーションには誰もが度肝を抜かれた。（※参考レビュー：「サカナクションの8cmシングル「忘れられないの/モス」を買ってみた」）

しかし、フロントマンの山口一郎本人は、この楽曲制作に非常に苦労したらしい。最終的にユーミン（松任谷由実）に相談して、何とか完成に至った、という以下のようなエピソードがある。

『忘れられないの』もあの時ユーミンさんに相談してるのよ、「ポップスを作りたいんです」っていう話をして。

そしたらユーミンさんは「あんたバカじゃないの」なんて調子で言われて。「5年後に評価されるのが本物のポップスなんだから、あんたもやってんじゃない?」みたいな事言ってくれて、ああじゃあちょっと勇気持ってやってみようと思って、それで『忘れられないの』を作ったんだよね。[music fun!]

いつも文学的な表現でリスナーを魅了してきたサカナクションが、ここまで素直な感情表現に挑んだことには本当に驚かされた。しかし、そのノスタルジックな曲調と歌詞を一つにして味わうとき、私たちの目の前には、彼らの原点である「あの故郷」の景色が鮮やかに浮かんでくる。
