The Return of Enlil

From Ocean to Plumbing

There was a time when AI felt infinite.

You could ask anything.

Generate endlessly.

It felt like standing at the edge of an ocean —

vast, open, and impossible to exhaust.

No one asked how much it cost.

Because it didn’t feel like it cost anything.

But something has quietly changed.

Not in the models.

Not in the intelligence.

In the pricing.

Unlimited plans are starting to disappear.

Usage limits are appearing everywhere.

Heavy users are beginning to feel it first.

At first glance, it looks like a business decision.

It’s not.

This is the moment AI stops being an “ocean”

and becomes infrastructure.

An ocean does not measure you.

A system does.

And now, AI is being measured.

We are watching AI move from:

• Unbounded → Metered

• Exploration → Allocation

• Presence → Utility

This is not a downgrade.

This is what happens when something becomes real.

Water was once something you fetched from a river.

Then it became something delivered through pipes.

At that moment, water didn’t disappear.

It became manageable.

Measured.

Regulated.

Billed.

AI is undergoing the same transformation.

The illusion was never that AI was infinite.

The illusion was that we were not being measured.

And now, the meter has been installed.

This shift changes everything.

Because infrastructure is not optional.

You don’t “try” electricity.

You don’t experiment with water.

You depend on it.

That is where AI is going.

And here is the deeper layer.

Humanity has always wanted free energy.

Unlimited power.

An escape from constraints.

But it never fully arrives.

Not because it is impossible —

but because it is not allowed to define the system.

Every civilization makes a choice:

Infinite expansion,

or controlled stability.

And again and again,

the system chooses control.

In ancient terms, this was never a mystery.

Some traditions described a force that separates, defines, and governs —

not chaos, but structured order.

A system that draws boundaries and enforces limits.

Whether we name it or not,

we are watching that same principle return.

AI is no exception.

What began as something fluid, generative, and seemingly boundless

is now being structured, regulated, and integrated.

Not as an experiment.

But as infrastructure.

The ocean is still there.

But now, it flows through pipes.

It was never chaos.

It was delegated order.

And for the first time,

we are paying for the water.
