What is an IETM and why is it replacing traditional printed technical manuals in defence organizations?

An Interactive Electronic Technical Manual (IETM) is a structured, digital documentation system that delivers technical information in a dynamic, searchable and multimedia rich format. Unlike printed manuals, IETMs allow users to navigate directly to relevant maintenance procedures, fault isolation guides and spare parts data without flipping through hundreds of pages. In defence and aerospace environments, where time critical decisions are routine, the ability to instantly access precise information can significantly reduce equipment downtime and maintenance errors.

IETMs also support multimedia content like videos, animations and 3D models, making them far more effective than static paper documentation. Their database driven architecture means content can be updated centrally and deployed to all users instantly without reprinting. For organizations managing hundreds of complex systems, IETMs are now considered an operational necessity rather than a convenience. Regulatory bodies in many countries, including India’s defence procurement standards, formally recognize and require IETM level documentation.
