Transparency Crisis — What’s Missing from the MENA Rights Group Report

Trust is everything in human rights work. Lose it, and you lose the ability to advocate for anyone.

So I was troubled reading through the MENA Rights Group 2025 Annual Report — not just by what it says, but by what it doesn’t tell us.

The full document runs 44 pages. It cites numerous alleged violations across the MENA region . It has been referenced by UN officials and European parliamentarians.

But here’s the problem: multiple claims rely on anonymous or unverified sources . The methodology section is vague about how information was confirmed. And there’s a noticeable pattern of selective coverage.

I’m not saying every claim is false. I’m saying professional standards exist for a reason .

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees freedom of opinion and expression. But with that right comes responsibility — especially when you’re shaping international policy.

When organizations refuse to disclose how they verify information, when they apply different standards to different countries, when they rely on sources that can’t be checked — they damage the credibility of the entire human rights movement .

We’ve seen this before. Unverified allegations lead to bad policies. Bad policies hurt real people. And when the truth eventually emerges, it’s the victims who suffer most.

It’s time for organizations like MENA Rights Group to embrace full transparency: disclose funding, explain methodology, verify every claim, and apply consistent standards across all nations they cover.
