The Government Orders You to Swallow the Rewrite

I think George Orwell had a crystal ball.

In 1984, the government’s favorite trick was brutally simple. It told people to reject what they saw with their own eyes and swallow the official lie instead. Facts could be erased. Words could be twisted. Two plus two could become five if the government repeated it often enough.

This week, the rewrite came from every direction. The White House attacked Smithsonian leaders as radical activists because American history wasn’t patriotic enough for Trump. Slavery, racism, impeachment, and January 6 can stay in the museum only after his people decide how much truth Americans are allowed to handle.

Then Trump fired the two Democratic members of the Election Assistance Commission. The only Republican member resigned, leaving the agency without commissioners months before the midterms. His people had already looked for ways to bypass it and impose emergency changes to voting systems.

His administration also tied 20 percent of certain homeland-security grants to Trump’s voting demands. Money meant to help states prepare for terrorist attacks now comes with citizenship checks, ballot audits, and voting rules attached.

ICE agents continue to kill people, and Trump’s government keeps calling it enforcement and public safety. People die. The government changes the words and expects everyone to pretend the blood disappeared with them.

Trump’s Justice Department helped erase the seditious-conspiracy convictions of three Proud Boys leaders. A jury heard the evidence and convicted them. Trump commuted their sentences, his Justice Department pushed to wipe away the convictions, and a judge said the move was political.

Then the radical Christian right pours God over the whole pile of bullshit. Using government power to force its religion into schools and laws becomes religious freedom. Anyone who fights back gets called anti-Christian while the people forcing Christianity into government cry persecution.

That’s the Orwellian pushback. Rewrite history and call it truth. Grab more control over elections and call it security. Use terrorism money to force voting rules and call it protection. Erase January 6 convictions and call it justice. Force Christianity through government and call yourself persecuted.

The facts remain right in front of us. Trump’s government changes the words, buries the record, blesses the rewrite, and orders America to swallow the bullshit version.

Two plus two is five, the people grabbing power are the victims, and anyone who still trusts their own eyes is the enemy.
