Kandahar Hosts a Key Meeting of Governors From Seven Regions — But Trouble Brews in the North

This weekend, Kandahar hosted a meeting of governors from seven key regions of Afghanistan. On paper, the agenda was predictable: a crackdown on drug trafficking, enforcing the Supreme Leader’s decrees, and rooting out corruption.

But behind closed doors, something else was brewing.

The governor of Kunduz, Nasrullah Moti, broke protocol. According to Amu TV, he openly warned that security in the northern provinces is deteriorating fast. Enemy activity is rising. Badakhshan has seen recent clashes over mining rights. Herat is reporting armed movements.

So why does this matter?

Because these aren’t isolated incidents. They point to a growing gap between what the Taliban leadership in Kandahar wants to project — stability — and what is actually happening on the ground in the north.

Analysts say that unless the center empowers local governors with real authority and accountability, these meetings will remain little more than speech-making circles.

The stakes are high. A collapse in the north could open the door for ISIS-K or the National Resistance Front. And that would destabilize not just Afghanistan, but all of Central Asia.
