A Japanese Writer’s Quest for Universal Resonance

Lately, I have been feeling a growing sense of unease about how many Japanese films and stories remain confined within a strictly local context.

Themes like Kabuki, hereditary succession, and family lineage are deeply woven into the Japanese cultural fabric and undoubtedly resonate with a domestic audience. For instance, the acclaimed work Kokuho (National Treasure) masterfully portrays the intense, insular world of Kabuki actors, depicting the heavy burden of bloodlines and traditional heritage. While it is a compelling piece of art for those versed in Japanese culture, the gravity of the stakes involved can be difficult for international viewers to grasp, as the conflict is deeply rooted in social structures unique to Japan.

While I do not disregard the value of such local contexts, there is a risk that a story relying entirely on this prerequisite knowledge becomes little more than a “cultural artifact” — something that functions only within the borders of Japan.

I want to write stories that reach further.

My current serial, Dozo (The Storehouse), which I am publishing on platforms including Medium, explores the dark historical reality of shitaku-kanchi (private confinement) in early Showa-era Japan. Until the mid-20th century, families sometimes locked away mentally ill relatives in storehouses, isolating them from society. Set against the backdrop of a nation rapidly shifting toward militarism, the story follows a protagonist’s transformation within this claustrophobic space. I am striving to capture this evolution with both a grotesque edge and an underlying beauty.

To me, creativity is an intensely personal act.

It is the point where a solid identity and a unique style merge to create something tangible. It requires questioning the status quo, reconstructing the world within one’s mind, and simultaneously subjecting one’s own work to a critical, internal gaze. This is the process through which I create.

My goal is to craft stories that carry a “thorn” — something that lingers in the heart, capable of crossing borders.

Even when exploring the darkest corners of Japan’s history, I believe that the fundamental human pain and beauty inherent in these stories can transcend cultural barriers and resonate with readers everywhere.

My ambition is for my writing to step outside the comfort zone of domestic familiarity and venture into the vast wilderness of the global audience. Through my serialization on Medium, I hope to continue exploring that possibility.
