Cherry Blossoms in Tokyo: 4 Secret Spots to Escape the Crowds

Here are the best spots for viewing the petals in peace

I’m writing this in the middle of March, and the latest forecast for cherry blossoms predicts they will start to bloom in Tokyo on March 18th, 2026.

Many tourists and locals are getting excited to see them. ChatGPT can give you a list of the most popular and most famous places for cherry blossom viewing. However, because so many people follow the same recommendations, they can get outrageously crowded. It can feel like there are more people than petals! Some places, such as Shinjuku Gyoen and Rikugien Garden, even require reservations to control the crowds.

Fortunately, there are many great secret spots to enjoy the cherry blossoms throughout Tokyo. I’ve cycled a lot for my bike tours, and found these are the very best!

These aren’t as famous as other spots, but based on my guiding experience, they are just as beautiful.

Tsukuda

This area is located along the Sumida River, offering great photo opportunities by the riverside. The path might not be as long as Sumida Park or Meguro River, but you will be surrounded by pink blooms at a much more relaxing pace. You can even take photos with the Tokyo Skytree in the distance.

Nihonbashi

In the backstreets behind Nihonbashi Takashimaya, there are streets where cherry blossoms line the road for some distance. Since this is a shopping and business district, there are many excellent restaurants and cafes available to visit before or after enjoying the scenery.

The Diet Front Park (South)

Enjoy amazing tranquility right in front of the Japanese Parliament. Surprisingly, this park has very few people even during the peak cherry blossom time. This is likely because there is less public transportation nearby, making it perhaps the best relaxing spot to see the blossoms in central Tokyo. You might even have the whole park to yourself!

Aoyama Cemetery

This cemetery is located in the vicinity of the Roppongi and Aoyama shopping areas. Most people only visit for religious events with their family, which preserves a peaceful atmosphere. The main street of the graveyard features a stunning canopy of blossoms.

Pros and Cons of Secret Spots

The pros are obvious: the spots I recommend here are much less crowded than the more famous locations.

However, there are cons, too. Most of these areas are tucked away from major tourist hubs, so they aren’t always the easiest to reach by public transportation. Convenience stores and cafes can be harder to find.
