SCGS Watch: The Global Sumud Flotilla and the Revival of Global Moral Solidarity

The Global Sumud Flotilla is a maritime humanitarian initiative aimed at delivering aid to Palestine. This action emerged in response to Israel’s blockade of Gaza, as well as ongoing injustice and human rights violations, which have sparked global civil society solidarity to support the Palestinian people. More than 40 ships and nearly 500 participants from various countries joined this international mission. The term “Sumud,” meaning steadfastness in Arabic, was chosen to reflect the determination of activists and Palestinians to resist the Israeli blockade. The Global Sumud Flotilla is not only about delivering aid but also serves as a political statement in support of Palestinian rights (Saleem et al., 2025).
This issue must continue to be monitored to demand justice within the current global political system. The Israeli–Palestinian conflict must be brought to an end in the name of humanity. Numerous waves of activism have called for an end to the war and the recognition of Palestinian rights. However, global institutions such as the United Nations have been unable to resolve this issue, as they remain influenced by the interests of Israel’s allies. The Global Sumud Flotilla is expected to raise global awareness about the pursuit of justice and the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people. This year, dozens of countries have joined the Global Sumud Flotilla, signaling growing international concern over this humanitarian crisis. The participation of these countries is also expected to exert political pressure on international institutions and Israel’s allies, who continue to turn a blind eye to the situation.
The Global Sumud Flotilla as a Symbol of Moral Solidarity
The Global Sumud Flotilla represents a tangible expression of transnational solidarity from the global community. Amid an international system largely driven by economic and political interests, global moral values have become increasingly eroded. The world often responds swiftly to certain humanitarian crises while remaining silent in others. This reality further exposes the double standards that persist in global humanitarianism. The Global Sumud Flotilla has thus emerged as an act of resistance against such injustice and a reflection of the enduring spirit of global solidarity. It conveys a clear message: when global governments fail to act, civil society will.
As the name “Sumud” suggests, this action illustrates the extraordinary persistence and courage of the activists. They remained steadfast despite facing various threats and accusations from the Israeli army that intercepted them. To share their spirit with the international community, the activists broadcast their journey live across various social media platforms. Through these live streams, the global audience was able to follow their voyage to Gaza in real time. The struggle, shared through these broadcasts, resonated widely and generated global empathy. The challenges and tensions caused by the Israeli army’s interception were also documented. Israeli authorities were reportedly boarding the intercepted ships, damaging their communication systems, and halting the activists’ live broadcasts (Comerford, 2025).
The Impact of the Sumud Flotilla
The flotilla carries profound meaning regarding the urgency of reestablishing international norms. Through this action, non-state actors seek to set the wheels of diplomacy in motion once again after a prolonged period of stagnation. It also demonstrates that civil society can play a significant role in upholding global norms. They remind us that security does not depend solely on political agreements, but also on the collective willingness to safeguard human dignity and rights wherever they are under threat.
The Sumud Flotilla has sparked a growing wave of protests related to the Palestinian issue. The experiences shared by activists on social media have heightened public awareness and strengthened pressure on the international community to take immediate action. In Italy, more than two million people demonstrated in response to the detention of Italian Parliament members Benedetta Scuderi and Annalisa Corrado. In this context, Corrado emphasized that the independence and radicalism of activists are essential to raising awareness, while politicians must take responsibility for building concrete solutions. She expressed hope that the large flotilla would have a lasting impact and be remembered as one of the historic events of this century (Vecchia, 2025).
Challenges and Obstacles
These activists faced an uphill battle, enduring harsh treatment from Israeli soldiers that ranged from verbal threats and ship interventions to acts of abduction. An Israeli Navy officer warned the ships not to approach the restricted zone and insisted that all aid must be delivered through the channels designated by Israel. Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, stated that Israel would deport the Global Sumud Flotilla activists after the Yom Kippur holiday concluded (Melimopoulos, 2025).
Before deporting them, Israel reportedly planned to detain and interrogate the activists. However, Israel should not have hijacked or detained the activists’ ships, as such actions constitute a violation of international maritime law. Most of Israel’s interceptions and attacks occurred in international waters, where it holds no territorial jurisdiction. The Sumud Flotilla’s sailing route passed through international and Palestinian territorial waters, meaning that Israel had no legal right to intercept the fleet (Duggal, 2025).
In addition, Israel reportedly committed various acts of violence against the activists even after their deportation. This was revealed through the testimony of an American citizen who had been detained by the Israeli army. According to David Adler’s account, the activists arrested alongside him were subjected to inhumane treatment, including being stripped naked and tied up before being taken to an internment camp. Adler stated that they endured psychological torture for five consecutive days (Harb, 2025).
Conclusion
The Global Sumud Flotilla has become a symbol of renewed global solidarity and moral consciousness amid a humanitarian crisis increasingly overlooked by international institutions. The word “Sumud” perfectly captures the commitment, courage, and persistence demonstrated by the flotilla’s activists. As a response to the failures of international institutions, this action is expected to exert greater pressure on the global community to take responsibility for unresolved humanitarian issues in Palestine.
Through social media, activists have shared their stories and reignited the moral awareness of the international community. The Global Sumud Flotilla is not merely a humanitarian mission, it is also a call for global politics to reestablish international morality as a cornerstone of the international order. Without courage, peace will remain difficult to achieve.
