My OneLot Onsite Experience

In January, our India engineering team traveled to Metro Manila for an onsite with the broader OneLot team. Since most of us work remotely from different parts of India, the trip felt like a refreshing change from our usual routine of Slack messages, sprint boards, and video calls.

For a few days, we got to work from the office in person, meet our Philippines teammates face to face, and understand the business beyond our usual engineering lens. It was the kind of experience that gave more context to our work and made the team feel more connected and aligned.

From Remote Calls to Real Conversations

Most of our engineering team is based in India and works remotely, so much of our day-to-day collaboration happens through messages, calls, and async updates. That setup works well, but being together in person changes the rhythm completely.

The office in Metro Manila had a warm, energetic feel. There was always something happening: quick discussions, people moving between teams, and a sense of momentum that is hard to fully feel on a screen. It felt lively without being chaotic. People were busy, but approachable. Conversations that would normally require a scheduled call happened naturally in a few minutes.

That was one of the first things that stood out to me. Work moved faster, but it also felt lighter.

Seeing the Business Up Close

One of the most valuable parts of the trip was joining the sales and operations teams for site visits. As engineers, we usually spend most of our time thinking about systems, product flows, bugs, releases, and delivery timelines. Being on the ground gave us a very different perspective.

What stayed with me most was seeing how closely our product connects to day-to-day operations in the real world. During one of the visits, watching the team interact directly with customers and partners made it clear that even small product decisions can have a big impact in the field. Things that may feel minor from an engineering perspective, like flow clarity, speed, or removing one extra step, can make a real difference in a fast-moving business environment.

The Two-Day Offsite

The biggest highlight of the trip was our two-day offsite on Friday and Saturday, where both the India and Philippines teams came together.

It was a mix of company planning, team discussions, and fun activities that made the experience both productive and memorable.

A big part of the offsite focused on company strategy and targets for 2026. These sessions helped us step back from our individual tasks and better understand the broader direction of the company.

We also discussed KPI and OKR frameworks, which brought more structure to how goals are set and tracked across teams. It was interesting to hear how different functions think about performance, priorities, and execution.

Later, we moved into breakout sessions and team-building activities, which shifted the energy nicely after the strategy discussions. There were games, group conversations, and plenty of casual moments that helped people open up.

One of the most fun parts of the offsite was how quickly everyone got competitive during the activities. What started as light team games turned into cheering, laughing, and playful arguments over who won what. That energy made the day even more memorable because it brought out personalities you do not always see on work calls.

The evening ended with dinner and a social night, which was one of the best parts of the trip. Once the formal sessions were over, the atmosphere became much more relaxed. People from different teams mixed naturally, conversations went beyond work, and it felt less like the “India team” and the “Philippines team” and more like one team enjoying time together.

What Surprised Me Most

The most surprising part of meeting the Philippines team in person was how familiar it felt almost immediately.

When you work remotely with people for a long time, you know them through calls, chats, and task updates. Meeting in person adds a different layer. You notice the energy, humor, working style, and small personality traits that do not fully come across online.

What stood out to me was how natural everything felt from day one. There was no awkwardness, no sense of meeting a “different office,” and no barrier between teams. Everyone was welcoming, open, and easy to talk to. That made collaboration feel much more natural.

What I Took Away

What stayed with me most from this trip was the sense of clarity it created.

It gave us a better understanding of the business, stronger connections across teams, and a clearer view of how our work fits into the bigger picture. Spending that time together made collaboration feel more natural and the company’s goals feel more shared.

We came back with more than meeting notes and strategy slides. We came back with better context, stronger relationships, and a deeper understanding of what we are building together.

For me, that was the biggest takeaway from Metro Manila. It was not just an onsite. It was a reminder that great work happens when people are aligned around the same purpose.
