Unfair Advantage: The Uncomfortable Truth
The uncomfortable truth about getting an unfair advantage (that nobody admits)
Most of us are walking around operating within invisible boundaries set by other people. We do what we think we should do. We try to fit in, get approval, and avoid rocking the boat.
We look at the guy at the next desk studiously beavering away and think the secret to success is just outworking him by ten percent.
It’s not. That’s just a recipe for burnout and average results. You only get average results when you do what the average Joe does.
If you want a serious, unfair advantage in life — the kind that gives you insane energy and separates you from the pack — you have to stop acting like a “well-behaved sheep”.
You have to be willing to do the things most people flat-out refuse to do.
This isn’t about doing something unethical or evil. It’s about exploring the parts of yourself and your work ethic that society might frown upon or call “obsessive”.
We live in a world obsessed with “balance.” But often, people who preach balance are just terrified of going all-in on something. They criticize you because you aren’t living a “balanced” life like they are.
But here’s the truth: obsession is a reward. When your work blends into your life because it is enlivening, you aren’t a zombie; you are finally in tune.
So, how do you get this edge? You need to identify the things that most people find difficult or uncomfortable, that you find easy — or at least necessary.
Here is the uncomfortable shift:
Stop trying to be liked by everyone. Fakeness smells. Say what you really mean. It’s not easy, but you lose a piece of yourself every time you say what you don’t mean just to keep the peace.
Stop moving so fast trying to keep up. Be a “take your time” mover. Make every action deliberate. Glide through life instead of rushing in a panic.
And finally, embrace the fact that the work that truly matters will polarize people. Be okay with criticism. If nobody thinks what you’re doing is a little crazy or too intense, you probably aren’t pushing hard enough.
Do the thing they won’t do. That’s where your power lies.
