For many years, both as a Feng Shui practitioner and life coach, I have been deeply inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi — the understanding that there is beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and authenticity.
Wabi Sabi gently reminds us to stop chasing flawless lives and instead learn to appreciate things exactly as they are: unfinished, evolving, weathered, and real. It has shaped not only the way I see homes and environments, but also the way I view people, relationships, aging, loss, and healing. In a world constantly asking us to be more, fix more, and achieve more, Wabi Sabi offers something quieter and far more compassionate: acceptance.
You can begin living a life that is full of gratitude, joy, and acceptance by adopting a Wabi Sabi attitude in your daily lives.
It doesn’t require us to change anything other than our perspective.
Wabi Sabi reminds us that life was never meant to be perfect, polished, or free from difficulty. Some days we feel light and hopeful, and other days we feel sad, frustrated, lonely, or afraid. That is part of being human.
The beauty is in remembering that nothing stays the same forever. A difficult day is not a difficult life. Emotions move, seasons change, hearts heal, and often the very things that once felt unbearable soften with time. One morning can feel completely different from the one before it.
Living with a Wabi Sabi attitude is not pretending everything is wonderful all the time. It is learning to hold both gratitude and grief, hope and uncertainty, joy and disappointment — all at once. It is trusting that even in the unfinished, imperfect moments of our lives, there is still beauty to be found.
When we stop fighting reality and begin meeting ourselves with gentleness, we create space for peace. And sometimes peace is not found in having the perfect life, but in learning to trust life as it unfolds.
