I did nothing today, the cats did it with me. We were a collective heap of laziness, spread out across the bed like a pile of old worn pillows that had given up on ever getting out of bed. It was cloudy out, humidity high and Clint Walker was on the screen, out wrangling the frontier danger in Night of the Grizzly, and my favorite sidekick, Jack Elam, was squinting his way through dilemmas like only he can. Meanwhile, my compadres and I were doing nothing more than shifting positions every now and then to keep the circulation going.

On these lazy days, the cats and I become bystanders of what was on the other side of that portal of glass., I usually call my bedroom window. On these days it is much more than that. We view the birds at the feeder outside my window, and on the really lucky days, the deer wander through feeding on our smorgasbord of weeds and grass. Last year they left us to babysit their twin fawns all summer. This year the twins are back with mom and another fawn. I think she must have just had it behind the barn because it was so little and wobbly. I didn’t know until recently that they came at night too. The yard light came on and there they were. They froze. They saw that we saw them and they ran to the edge of light and ate there. Then the light blinked off and we could see them no more. I wonder if they are out there now. I wonder that every night now.. They know we are here too. If the birds run out of feed they are quick to let me know. They stare at the window with their heads cocked or even fly up and peck on the glass for my attention.

Maybe it was the aftermath of the storm that went through but there’s something comforting about these quiet days — the kind where the world keeps spinning but you don’t feel the need to spin with it. Just me, five cats, an old movie, and whatever wildlife decides to drop by and say hello.
