A founder’s guide to perfume longevity in Singapore’s heat and humidity, grounded in how fragrance is actually built, written by the founder of a fragrance house that composes for this climate.

Almost everyone in Singapore has had the same small disappointment. You spray a perfume you love in the morning, you can still catch it as you leave the house, and by the time you have walked to the MRT and stood on a warm platform it has quietly packed up and gone. The usual advice in response is a list of tips. I want to do something more useful, which is to explain what is actually happening, because once you understand how a perfume is built and why it behaves the way it does in our climate, the tips stop being a list to memorise and start being obvious. I make perfume in this heat for a living, so this is the honest, and slightly more technical, version of the answer.
A perfume is an architecture of volatility
The single most useful thing to understand is that a perfume is not one smell. It is a structure made of materials that evaporate at different speeds, and that structure is the reason it changes on you through the day.
Perfumers call the parts the top, the heart and the base, and as Robert Calkin and Stephan Jellinek set out, that structure is organised by comparative volatility.[¹] The top note is built from the most volatile materials, the heart from materials of medium volatility, and the base from the least volatile ones. Volatility simply means how readily a material evaporates into the air. The bright citrus and green notes you smell first are the most volatile, so they lift off quickest. The woods, resins and musks of the base are the least volatile, so they are still there hours later. The different vapour pressures of the ingredients mean they make themselves felt at different stages, the most volatile early, the most tenacious at the dry-down.[²]
So when a scent seems to “disappear”, what has usually happened is that the volatile top has evaporated as designed, and what remains is a quieter base you may have stopped noticing. The perfume has moved through its architecture, faster here than it would in a cooler place.
Why Singapore speeds the whole arc up
Evaporation is driven by heat. Warmth gives the molecules the energy to leave the surface of your skin faster, so in our climate the entire structure plays at a quicker tempo. The volatile top notes, already the first to go, burn off sooner still, and the heart follows faster than it would in an air-conditioned European autumn. Warm, slightly damp skin adds to this, lifting and dispersing the fragrance more quickly into the air around you. None of this is a flaw in the perfume. It is physics, and it is the same physics every fragrance worn in Singapore is subject to.
Fixatives: how perfumers engineer staying power
Here is the part most “make your perfume last” articles never mention, and it is the most important. Longevity is not mostly about how strong a scent smells on first spray. It is built into the composition, through materials called fixatives.
A fixative is a low-volatility material that evaporates slowly and, in doing so, slows the evaporation of the more volatile materials around it. Historically, as Calkin and Jellinek record, perfumers reached for tinctures of musk, ambergris and civet, and balsamic materials such as benzoin and myrrh, precisely to hold the lighter aromatics and extend a perfume’s lasting power.[¹] The modern palette does the same job with materials whose vapour pressure is very low; certain musks and vanillin evaporate so slowly that they slow down the other constituents in the formula, lengthening the whole.[²]
This is why a well-built perfume can outlast a louder, cheaper one that has nothing underneath it. Tenacity comes from structure, from the base and its fixatives, not from sheer volume on the opening. It is also why “long-lasting” is a composition decision a maker takes at the bench, long before the bottle reaches you.
Concentration: eau de parfum versus eau de toilette
Concentration is the lever most people do know about, and it is real, within limits. Eau de parfum carries a higher proportion of fragrance oil than eau de toilette, so as a rule it projects a little more and holds a little longer. Eau de toilette is lighter and fresher, which in genuine heat can be the more comfortable choice even though it does not last as long. Neither is better in the abstract. In our climate the honest trade-off is that eau de parfum buys you longevity and eau de toilette buys you ease, and the right answer depends on the day and the wearer.
The wearer: skin chemistry and your own nose
Two things about longevity have nothing to do with the bottle at all.
The first is your skin. A fragrance lasts differently on different people, because skin type, how warm or dry your skin runs, and your own chemistry all affect how a scent unfolds and how long it holds. Dry skin holds fragrance poorly, which is why the same perfume can sing on a friend and fade on you. The only real test of longevity is how a scent wears on your own skin across a day, not how it performs on a paper strip or on someone else.
The second is your nose. You stop smelling your own perfume long before it is actually gone, through a well-documented effect called olfactory adaptation: the nervous system tunes out a constant, unchanging signal so it can stay alert to new ones.[³] A scent you can no longer detect on yourself is often perfectly noticeable to the person beside you. Some of the Singapore “fade” is real evaporation, and some of it is simply your own nose getting used to the scent. It is worth knowing the difference before you reach for more.
The honest ceiling
I will be straight about the limit, because the category loves to over-promise here. No perfume is immune to a Singapore afternoon, and any brand claiming all-day power in this heat regardless of how you wear it is selling you something. What a well-made, climate-conscious fragrance can do is hold its character longer and more cleanly through the day, because its structure and fixatives were chosen with this heat in mind. That is a real and worthwhile thing, and it is the honest version of the promise.
How to make any perfume last longer here
Once the architecture makes sense, the practical habits follow naturally, and how you wear a scent often matters more than which bottle you buy.
Apply to clean, moisturised skin, because fragrance grips hydrated skin far better than dry skin and lasts noticeably longer on it. A light unscented moisturiser or a dab of plain balm on your pulse points before you spray gives the scent something to hold onto. Aim for the warm pulse points, the wrists, the base of the throat, behind the ears, where a little warmth helps the fragrance project gently rather than all at once.
Do not rub your wrists together after spraying. It feels natural, but it generates heat and friction that flash off the delicate top notes faster, so spray and let it dry undisturbed. Spray onto skin rather than soaking it into clothes, since skin is where a fragrance is designed to develop, and neat fragrance on delicate, pale or silk fabric can mark it. Store the bottle well, too: heat, light and humidity all degrade a fragrance over time, so a drawer or cupboard away from the sun keeps it true far longer than a sunny sill or a steamy bathroom shelf.
Most reliable of all, lean on a small top-up rather than a heavy morning dose. A refillable travel size or a roll-on in your bag lets you refresh lightly in the afternoon, which works far better in this climate than drowning yourself at eight in the morning and hoping it survives. A measured reapplication is the single most dependable way to carry a scent through a Singapore day.
