President Xi Calls Taiwan “Reunification” Unstoppable

Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that the reunification of Taiwan with mainland China is “unstoppable” in his New Year’s Eve address, describing it as a historic “trend of the times” and part of China’s national revival. His remarks reaffirm Beijing’s long-standing position that Taiwan is part of China, despite decades of separate governance.

Xi stressed this message shortly after large-scale military drills concluded around Taiwan, signalling Beijing’s readiness to project power in the region and reinforce its territorial claims. The exercises involved multiple branches of the People’s Liberation Army and were framed by Chinese state sources as defensive and symbolic assertions of sovereignty.

Taipei’s Response and Taiwan’s Stance

Taiwan’s leadership, including President Lai Ching-te, responded firmly, pledging to defend national sovereignty and maintain democratic self-rule in the face of Beijing’s pressure. Taipei reiterated that only the Taiwanese people should decide their future, rejecting external claims over the island.

Taiwan’s defence officials have also highlighted concerns that China’s ongoing military activities near the island threaten regional stability and could escalate tension in the Taiwan Strait.

International Context and Reactions

Amid these developments, U.S. policy and reactions have also entered the spotlight. U.S. President Donald Trump commented that decisions about Taiwan are ultimately up to Xi Jinping, though he stressed his preference for maintaining the status quo and expressed unhappiness with any use of force. The U.S. remains Taiwan’s key security partner, legally obligated to help the island defend itself.

What “Reunification” Means in Beijing’s Eyes

For Beijing, “reunification” reflects the one-China principle, a policy foundation that asserts there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of it even though the two sides have separate governments and political systems. Chinese officials regularly assert that reunification is part of completing national restoration and rejuvenation.

However, the concept is deeply controversial. Taiwan’s major political parties and public opinion largely oppose reunification under Chinese sovereignty, especially given stark differences in political freedoms and governance systems. Taiwan continues to strengthen its defensive posture and diplomatic relationships to counter potential coercive moves from the mainland.

Xi Jinping’s latest declaration reinforces China’s long-held goal of bringing Taiwan under Beijing’s rule, framing it as inevitable and backed by historical and political reasoning. Taipei has pushed back with assurances of defending its democratic system and sovereignty, and the situation continues to shape strategic calculations across the Asia-Pacific involving key actors like the United States and regional democracies.
