When Systems Harm

Most systems aren’t broken.

At least not by the customary definition.

They’re doing exactly what they were designed to do.

That’s the problem.

I’ve spent years inside systems: courtrooms, healthcare environments, and organizations under pressure.

And I’ve learned something that challenges how we usually think about performance, behavior, and results:

People don’t usually fail due to a lack of skill.

They struggle because the system around them, their environment is shaping their behavior.

Burnout isn’t always about resilience.

A lack of engagement isn’t always about motivation.

And poor outcomes aren’t always about effort.

Sometimes the system rewards the wrong behaviors, ignores human limits, and creates conditions in which people are expected to survive, not thrive.

When we slow down and really observe what’s happening we learn that:

What we call performance issues are often system responses.

What we call non-compliance is often adaptation.

What we call resistance may be protection.

I’ve started thinking about this through a different lens:

Systems — Harm — Response — Friction — Transformation

Because better results don’t just happen because we want them to.

We have to ask better questions:

● Where is the system creating harm?

● How are people adapting to survive it?

● Why do change efforts keep failing?

If we do not address these questions, we’ll keep trying to “fix” people inside systems that were not designed to support them.

The best systems don’t just demand more from people.

They are designed with people in mind.
