Honda Civic Si Mods Guide — Where to Start and What Actually Works

The Honda Civic Si is one of the best platforms to modify in the compact car segment. The K20C2 turbocharged engine responds meaningfully to bolt-on modifications, the six-speed manual transmission makes every improvement feel direct and engaging, and the aftermarket is deep enough to build exactly the car you want without hunting for parts.

But most Si owners make the same mistake — they start with the wrong modification and waste money on things that deliver less than expected.

Here is the correct order and what each modification actually delivers.

Start With a Cold Air Intake

The factory airbox on the Civic Si is deliberately restrictive. Honda designed it to be quiet and compliant — not to extract maximum performance. A cold air intake from Injen, PRL or K&N replaces that restrictive box with a wider, smoother tube that pulls cooler air from outside the engine bay.

The result is immediately noticeable. Throttle response sharpens from the first drive. The turbo spool sound becomes satisfying and mechanical under acceleration. And you gain 8–12 horsepower in real world conditions — not the inflated numbers manufacturers advertise, but genuine and feelable gains.

Cost: $250–350. Install time: 45 minutes.

Add a Cat-Back Exhaust Second

The stock Si exhaust is one of Honda’s biggest missed opportunities on this platform. For a car positioned as a performance model it sounds completely ordinary. An aftermarket cat-back transforms this completely.

The K20C2 has a naturally high-revving character with genuine mechanical soul — an aftermarket exhaust brings this out in a way the factory system completely suppresses. Borla, Injen and AWE all make excellent Si-specific systems that complement the engine’s character without droning at highway speeds.

Cost: $600–900. The improvement in daily driving enjoyment alone justifies this.

Get an ECU Tune Third

This is where the Si platform really separates itself from other compact cars. The K20C2 is conservatively tuned from the factory — Honda deliberately leaves significant power on the table. A quality tune from Phearable or Hondata adjusts boost pressure, fuel mapping and ignition timing to extract what the engine is genuinely capable of.

Combined with the cold air intake you installed first, a tune delivers 25–40 additional wheel horsepower. This is the single largest power gain available to the Si without touching the engine internals. The car feels like a completely different machine after a proper tune.

Cost: $400–600 for hardware and tune combined.

Lower It Fourth

The Si’s factory suspension is already better than the standard Civic — stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, more direct steering. But it still sits higher than it should visually and body roll in corners is still present.

Coilovers from BC Racing or Rev9 give you adjustable ride height and damping stiffness. A 20–25mm drop fills the wheel arches completely and transforms the car’s visual profile. The handling improvement in spirited driving is immediately obvious — less body roll, more precise cornering, better feedback through the steering wheel.

Always get an alignment after lowering. Budget $80–100 for this — it is not optional.

Cost: $500–1,200 depending on brand.

The Si Mod Order — Summary

The reason this order matters is compound gains. The intake gives the tune more to work with. The tune extracts more from the intake than either delivers alone. The exhaust complements both by letting the engine breathe more freely at higher RPMs. The suspension makes the increased power usable and confidence inspiring in corners.

Doing them in a different order is not wrong — but doing them in this order gives you the best result from each modification dollar spent.
