The ALF appliance (Advanced Lightwire Functional) was developed in 1983 by Dr. Derek Nordstrom. It consists of a thin, tempered wire that is placed on the inner surface of the mouth and secured with small loops.

ALF is based on principles of cranial osteopathy. It gently influences the cranial bones, fascia, and membranes, helping tissues return to a more physiological position.

The idea is simple: a bite is not only about teeth. It’s about the entire cranial and facial skeletal system.

Using the ALF appliance allows us to: – gently relieve tension in the cranial bones; – restore natural tissue mobility; – support harmonious facial skeletal development; – influence bite formation without aggressive force.

This method can be indicated for children as young as 4–5 years old, when jaw development is still very active.

One of the most common questions: is it painful? In most cases — no.

Advantages of the ALF appliance: – gentle action with minimal discomfort; – aesthetic invisibility (it is placed inside the mouth); – easier hygiene maintenance due to its removable format; – works not only on the defect but also on the underlying causes; – balanced influence on cranial structures, reducing the likelihood of relapse.

People usually wonder whether it’s “too gentle to be effective.” But that gentleness is precisely its key feature.

However, there are limitations.

Possible disadvantages and considerations: – temporary discomfort may occur; – in rare cases, patients may experience changes in breathing sensation or visual perception due to structural adaptation; – positive results require continuous supervision by a qualified specialist.

ALF is not a fast way to “straighten teeth.” It is a system-based approach.

He said this after a few months of treatment: “I don’t feel pressure. But I do feel that something is changing.”
