The Goddess

Are you afraid of the night? How about being afraid of the Night? Or what about its goddess — Nyx? Are you afraid of her? Of course you are, no matter what you think or say. I am afraid of the night, and the Night, and of Nyx, which means everyone is. My fear is normal and justifiable — if Zeus and Kronos were afraid of Nyx, then who wouldn't? Same with Yahweh — first thing he did was to separate darkness and light. Darkness in and by itself was too much, was too unbearable for a mere Demiurge. We have found ways over the years and generations to tame the Night. It is simple — more and more artificial lighting, outside and inside. That helps us not to think about her. That helps us to fall asleep without crippling fear of darkness and death. That and the pills. And drugs and addictive substances. And a constant barrage of worries about mundane and inconsequential things. That is something we learn in childhood as a coping mechanism. How else would any of us go to bed and hope for a restful sleep? All you have to do is worry about something else, something entirely made up and trivial. Yet, there are moments in the deepest night when the primal understanding of the Night comes back. Then the only thing that helps me is the physical presence of my bed.
