I Gave an AI My Laptop and 2 Hours a Day. It Built Me a Passive Income Business in 30 Days.

I didn’t write the articles. I didn’t design the products. I just made the decisions.

Last year, I was doing what most people do when they want extra income online. I was watching YouTube tutorials at midnight. Bookmarking “how to start a blog” articles I never finished reading. Buying a course that sat unwatched in my email for three months. Starting aNotion doc called “business ideas” that had 27 bullet points and zero action. I had the desire. I had some free time. The Mindset Shift That Changed Everything

Most people use AI to save five minutes on an email. I use it to replace 80% of the labour in building a content business. There is a difference between using AI as a tool and using AI as an engine. A tool helps you do a task faster. An engine does the task for you while you focus on strategy. The moment I stopped asking AI to “help me write” and started asking it to “write this for me while I direct,” everything changed. My job became the creative director, not the content factory. And creative directing takes two hours a day, not twelve. Here is the system.

The 4-Part AI Income System

Part 1 — The Niche (Day 1) The first thing I did was spend one hour with AI to identify my niche. I didn’t guess. I didn’t go with my passion. I asked the AI to analyse which topics on Medium consistently earn the most from the Partner Program, have an obvious digital product attached, and have a reader who is actively looking for solutions — not just browsing. The answer was specific. Not “productivity” — that’s too broad. Not “finance” — that’s too crowded at the top. The sweet spot is a specific problem for a specific person. For me it was: remote workers who feel busy all day but can’t point to what they actually got done. The pain is real, the audience is huge, and the product (a done-for-you daily planning system) sells itself. Your action: Pick one painful, specific problem that a defined group of people desperately want solved. The more specific, the better. “How to focus better” is weak. “How remote workers protect deep work time from Slack and meetings” is a product.

Part 2 — The Article (Days 2–3) Here is the exact process I use to write a Medium article that earns. I open a conversation with AI and give it one prompt. Not a vague prompt like “write me an article about productivity.” A structured brief that tells it exactly what I need. The brief includes: the topic, the target reader, their specific pain point, the headline formula I want, the tone (first person, honest, practical), the structure (hook, problem, solution, example, action step, CTA), and the formatting rules (short paragraphs, subheadings, one table or list for scannability). The AI produces a complete 1,600-word draft in under two minutes. I then spend 20–30 minutes doing one thing: making it sound like a human who lived this experience. I add one specific detail from my own life. I change two or three sentences that sound too polished. I make sure the hook hits hard. That’s my editing process. Twenty minutes. Not two weeks. What this produces: An article that reads as personal and authentic, is structured for maximum reading time (which is how Medium calculates your earnings), and ends with a natural call-to￾action pointing to a paid product.

Part 3 — The Product (Days 3–5) Every article I publish has a paid product attached to it on Gumroad. The product is not separate from the article — it is the natural extension of it. The article teaches the concept. The product delivers the done-for-you version of what the article describes. Here is the formula: the article solves 70% of the problem for free. The product solves the remaining 30% with a ready-made tool that saves the reader hours of setup. Again, the AI builds the product content. I give it a second prompt: “Based on the article you just wrote, create the complete content for a digital product that goes deeper. Give me the full product outline, the written content for each section, and the Gumroad listing copy.” In one session — typically 90 minutes total including back-and-forth — I have a complete article and a complete product ready to publish. The products I’ve launched this way: A fillable productivity planner (HTML file, works in any browser, no apps needed) A step-by-step freelance pitch email system with 12 templates A personal finance tracker with a built-in debt payoff calculator Each one priced between $9 and $27. Each one sells passively while I’m doing other things.

Part 4 — The Flywheel (Week 2 onward) One article and one product is a start. The compounding begins at article three or four. Here is what the flywheel looks like: Each new article sends readers to existing products. Each product sale builds social proof that makes the next product sell better. Each month of Partner Program payments grows as your article library grows — because evergreen articles keep earning indefinitely. I publish one article per week. Each article takes me about two hours from brief to published. Each article links to one or two products. By month three, the system is generating income from every direction simultaneously. The AI does the heavy lifting. I make the creative calls. Two hours a day.

The Numbers (Honest) I won’t give you fantasy income claims. Here is what the first 90 days actually looked like for me: Month 1: $120 from Medium Partner Program + $85 from Gumroad = $205 Month 2: $310 from Medium + $240 from Gumroad = $550 Month 3: $520 from Medium + $410 from Gumroad = $930 By month three I had 14 published articles and 4 Gumroad products. The 3 Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To) Mistake 1: Publishing without a product linked. My first three articles had no Gumroad link. I lost weeks of potential sales. Every article needs a product from day one — even a simple $9 PDF counts. Mistake 2: Making the product too complicated. My first product was a 40-page ebook. It took ten days to feel ready enough to publish. My second product was a one-page email swipe file. It took two hours and outsold the ebook in the first month. Start simple. A focused, useful $12 product beats an exhaustive $27 one every time. Mistake 3: Treating the AI output as the final product. AI gives you a great first draft. Not a finished piece. The 20-minute edit where you add your personality and one specific real-life detail is what makes the article feel human — and that is the difference between 200 reads and 2,000.

1. Open an AI conversation and spend 30 minutes identifying your niche — pick one painful, specific problem.

3. Spend 20 minutes editing to add your voice.
