Here I am savoring yesterday’s buttered popcorn and contemplating the film *Disclosure Day*. Director/Producer Steven Spielberg has been extremely tight-lipped about what this movie explores.
“This film is more about humanity, and people, and community and the things that divide us… and things that can bring us together,” Spielberg said in an interview with Rachel Abrams. “I wanted to do a story about bringing humanity together again.”
In promotional interviews, Spielberg says the movie is about aliens and goes on to nostalgically talk about the music of John Williams. The score is awesome and really adds to the suspense of the film, considering the first thirty minutes are all character and plot exposition.
Williams and Spielberg have had a creative musical bromance since the early films Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and ET, The Extra-Terrestrial. Spielberg obviously likes creating films about aliens, with those films and Cowboys & Aliens and War of the Worlds on his list.
Spielberg says there is now a plethora of visuals documenting aliens. “I don’t understand why they haven’t come to me yet. Come on, I feel like their agent… I now believe the believers,” he said.
All right, so we know *Disclosure Day *is about aliens, and we know it’s about the disclosure of aliens. And it has great music. I guess I’m not giving anything away there. I can’t discuss this movie without going into depth on the entire characterization and plot. So it isn’t going to happen here. NO spoilers.
I can’t even tell you the theme of this film, not only because it’s complex, but also open to interpretation. I’m not really sure what it was about and that’s a good thing. I certainly don’t want to put ideas into your head before you see the film. Themes are ruminating from this film, particularly how religious people will respond to the knowledge of aliens.
Spielberg stresses the film is about empathy for others.
Emily Blunt who excels at horror in A Quiet Place series and comedy with *The Devil Wears Prada 2, gives an excellent performance in the film. Blunt has been interviewed about [Disclosure Day](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15047880/?ref_=fn_t_1)* and her linguistic abilities, which feel authentic as they are executed in the film.
Blunt plays Margaret Fairchild, a weathercaster at a television station. As many broadcasters do, she moves cities frequently, looking to find her dream life. Soon, she becomes embroiled in intrigue and otherworldly directives for her life. Wyatt Russell is her boyfriend, who begins to doubt her sanity as strange events unfold.

Award-winning actor Josh O’Connor is Dr. Daniel Kellner, a young cybersecurity mathematics expert. He worked for the Wardex Corporation and is now entrusted with the huge responsibility of protecting a backpack of information which will change everything in the world.

His girlfriend Jane, played by Eve Hewson, is a smart, faithful woman who gets caught up in Daniel’s drama and quest. She ends up being a key player in the future of earth itself.
Colin Firth is Noah Scanlon, the head of the Wardex Corporation, who is trying to prevent the world from learning about the aliens. He is an adequate menace, and he has two fabulous scenes with Colman Domingo, who is a Wardex defector and whistleblower. Don’t go for popcorn during these scenes in the middle of the film!

There is the obligatory car chase scene. But an action-packed car/train accident scene really steals the show on a visual level. I was hoping for an astounding visual finale at the end of the film, similar to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but was disappointed when the film didn’t deliver.

*Disclosure Day does make you think and ask thought-provoking questions about humanity. I’d say most likely there will be a sequel. And I want to see [Disclosure Day](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt15047880/?ref_=fn_t_1)* again. I’ll leave it at that.
I also enjoyed the easter eggs and symbols found planted in the film. Especially his old friendly shot of a little girl looking astonished. How many films does he have this shot in?

I did expect the end of the film to be a huge visual extravaganza of aliens saving earth from destruction, similar to when the space ship came down over Devils’ Mountain in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This doesn’t happen, so don’t get your hopes up.
*Disclosure Day *dragged on for about half an hour as the plot and characterization unfolded. Give it time; it’s worth it in the end. Make your own judgments and tell me what you think. Please, no spoilers for the rest of the readers!!

“In the summer of 2023, Steven Spielberg spent two months writing a 50–60 page story outline that would serve as the basis of Disclosure Day. Spielberg was inspired by the 2017 article “Glowing Auras and ‘Black Money’: The Pentagon’s Mysterious U.F.O. Program”, published in *The New York Times*, which he described as having rekindled his interest in the subject. In April 2024, it was publicly announced that Spielberg’s next directing project would be a UFO film based on his own original idea, with David Koepp, who had previously collaborated with Spielberg on multiple films, writing the screenplay from Spielberg’s original story.
