Stripe Smart Disputes: The End of Losing Money to Chargebacks You Should Have Won

Starting June 2026, Stripe’s AI is fighting chargebacks for you. Here’s everything you need to know.

Stripe Smart Disputes

Stripe Smart Disputes

Online merchants lose an incredible amount of revenue to chargebacks which are more often than not customers disputing honest services or products.

If a customer disputes a pay, say $120 for a service your SaaS is offering, there is often little you can do. By the time you see the chargeback notification, the bank might have already reversed the funds.

Normally, Stripe gives you the chance to recover the funds by submitting evidence in your favor. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t.

But all this is about to change with Stripe Smart Disputes.

What Is Stripe Smart Disputes?

Stripe Smart Disputes is an AI-powered chargeback management tool built directly into Stripe.

Stripe just sent me an email saying they will roll it out in June 2026!

What Stripe Smart Disputes does or will do is to AI analyze the dispute, pull relevant evidence from your Stripe data such as transaction records and compile an evidence packet tailored to the specific reason code of that dispute.

The thing that makes Stripe Smart Disputes amazing is that even if you don’t take action before the response deadline, Stripe will automatically submit the evidence on your behalf.

As a SaaS owner, you will no longer miss deadlines or scratch your head over chargebacks.

What’s more, stripe will automatically give you 30% of the chargeback when the evidence is in your favor!

How Bad Is the Chargeback Problem, Really?

Before we go further, it’s worth understanding the scale of what we’re dealing with.

Global chargeback volume is on track to hit **337 million transactions by 2026** which is a 42% jump from 2023. Three out of four of those disputes come from real customers who received real goods and services, and disputed the charge anyway. That’s friendly fraud which in humble opinion is the worst kind of fraud because you never see it coming.

Another thing:

Fighting a dispute is a losing battle as a merchant you win just 45% of the time. Even worse, the hidden costs are staggering. Between fees, lost inventory, and wasted time, every dollar lost to a chargeback actually costs you $4.61.

How Stripe Smart Disputes Will Work

Let’s walk through what happens from the moment a dispute lands on your account.

  1. A customer files a chargeback on a card transaction through their bank.
  2. Stripe notifies you by email and flags the dispute in your dashboard.
  3. If the dispute is eligible, Smart Disputes will immediately begin compiling an evidence packet automatically, using your Stripe transaction data, customer records, and payment history.
  4. You receive a recommendation with the compiled evidence. You can review it, add anything from outside Stripe such as shipping confirmations, emails, service records.
  5. If the deadline approaches and you haven’t acted, Stripe will submit the evidence for you. You won’t lose by default.
  6. If you win, Stripe will take 30% of the recovered amount as a success fee. If you lose, that fee won’t apply.

That last point is the one that should catch your attention. Stripe will only get paid when you get paid. There’s no fee for losing, no subscription, no setup cost. The entire model is built on Stripe winning when you win.

The AI behind Smart Disputes is trained on more than $1.4 trillion in annual payments volume. It knows what evidence actually works for each dispute reason code — not generic best practices, but patterns from real dispute outcomes across the Stripe network.

The 30% Fee: Is It Worth It?

Fair question. Let’s do the math plainly.

Before Smart Disputes, Stripe introduced a $15 dispute counter fee (rolled out June 2025) for merchants who choose to fight a chargeback. That fee is refunded if you win. If you lose, it’s gone. And since most merchants win about 45% of contested disputes, that fee adds real friction to the decision to fight.

Smart Disputes will change the math entirely:

• The $15 dispute counter fee will be waived when you use Smart Disputes

• Stripe will take 30% of whatever you recover only if you win

• If you lose, you will pay nothing extra beyond the standard dispute receipt fee that applies to all disputes

Real numbers on a real dispute

Take that $120 service dispute from the opening. Under the old model, fighting it manually meant risking a $15 counter fee with a 45% chance of recovering $120. Expected value: roughly $39, minus your time.

Under Smart Disputes: you will risk nothing extra. If you win, you’ll recover $84 (70% of $120). If you lose, you’ll be no worse off than before. And you won’t have spent an hour building the evidence packet yourself.

For businesses currently not contesting disputes at all which is most small merchants the calculation is even simpler. Zero will become something. That’s the whole value proposition.

What Smart Disputes Won’t Do

From what I have seen, here is are some of the limits of this new roll out by Stripe:

It can only use what’s inside Stripe

Smart Disputes will build its evidence from your Stripe data. That means transaction records, customer history, payment metadata, IP data, billing information. What it will not be able to access: your shipping carrier records, your helpdesk conversations, your CRM notes, delivery photos, signed contracts, anything that lives outside the Stripe ecosystem.

For dispute reason codes like “item not received” or “not as described” where external documentation is often the deciding factor Smart Disputes may build a partial case in those scenarios. This is exactly why the manual review window exists. When those disputes come in, check what Stripe compiled, and add whatever you have externally before the deadline.

Not every dispute qualifies

Eligibility depends on the dispute reason code, the payment method, and whether the available evidence is relevant and useful. You’ll know exactly which disputes are eligible Stripe notifies you by email and flags them clearly in the dashboard.

Fraud disputes vs. service disputes

Smart Disputes will perform best on fraud-based chargebacks and duplicate charge disputes, where the evidence Stripe holds internally card fingerprints, IP matching, transaction history is often sufficient to win. For service-based disputes where the story lives in your email thread with the customer, it needs your help.

Think of Smart Disputes as your floor, not your ceiling. It will handle everything automatically. For high-value disputes or ones where you have strong external evidence, step in and add it before submission.

The Hidden Benefit: Your Dispute Rate

There’s a downstream effect of fighting more disputes that most merchants don’t think about.

Visa and Mastercard monitor your dispute rate which is the ratio of disputes received to transactions processed. Cross a threshold (Visa recently tightened theirs as of April 2026), and you enter a monitoring program. That means monthly fines, increased scrutiny from your acquirer, and in serious cases, restrictions on your ability to process cards.

When you contest more disputes and win more of them, you will protect your revenue directly. But you also demonstrate to card networks and your payment processor that you’re an engaged, responsible merchant. That reputation matters more than most people realize.

Smart Disputes will also work alongside Stripe’s other dispute tools. Dispute deflection, powered by Verifi and Ethoca, will push more transaction detail to customers before they ever file a dispute — resolving many potential chargebacks before they start. Smart Refunds will flag transactions likely to be disputed and recommends proactive refunds. Together, these tools will defend your dispute rate at every stage.

How to Get Ready Before June 2026

Smart Disputes will be automatically enabled on eligible Stripe accounts starting June 2026. You won’t need to do anything to activate it. But there are a few things worth doing now.

Know your baseline

Pull your current dispute data from Stripe. How many disputes did you receive last month? How many did you contest? What was your win rate? If you don’t know these numbers today, you won’t be able to measure how much Smart Disputes will change them.

Clean up your Stripe data

Smart Disputes will work from your transaction data. Accurate customer details, correct metadata, clear statement descriptors — these directly affect the quality of the evidence it can compile. A dispute on a transaction with missing customer information gives the AI less to work with.

Know where your external evidence lives

For the dispute types where Smart Disputes will need your help — item not received, not as described, cancelled subscription — know where the supporting evidence lives. Shipping confirmation in your carrier portal. Service records in your helpdesk. Usage logs in your app. When Smart Disputes flags a dispute for review, you’ll want to be able to supplement in minutes, not hours.

Decide on auto-submission

By default, Smart Disputes will auto-submit evidence on your behalf if you don’t act before the deadline. If you want to review every dispute manually first, you can turn off auto-submission in your Stripe dashboard under Radar → Dispute Management. You’ll still get all the AI-compiled evidence — you just submit it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Stripe Smart Disputes work for all chargebacks?

No. It works for eligible card transaction disputes. Eligibility depends on the dispute reason code, payment method, and whether useful evidence is available. You’re notified by email and in the dashboard for every eligible dispute.

What Will Smart Disputes cost?

If Smart Disputes wins a dispute, Stripe will take 30% of the recovered amount. If you lose, no Smart Disputes fee applies. The standard dispute receipt fee still applies to all disputes regardless of outcome.

Can I still fight disputes manually?

Yes. You can always review and manually submit before the deadline. Smart Disputes auto-submission will be a fallback for when you don’t act, not a replacement for your judgment on important disputes.

Can I turn it off?

Yes.

When does it launch?

Stripe is rolling Smart Disputes out automatically to eligible accounts starting June 2026. Watch your email for the rollout notification specific to your account.

How is this different from third-party chargeback tools?

Third-party tools like Chargeflow can pull evidence from outside Stripe — your CRM, shipping carriers, helpdesk records giving broader coverage on certain dispute types. Smart Disputes wins on simplicity and cost: zero integration, zero upfront cost, and you only pay when you win. For most merchants, it’s the obvious starting point.

Final Thought

Chargebacks have always been the part of running an online business where the house wins.

You lose the sale. You lose the product or service you already delivered. You pay the dispute fee just for receiving it. And then you spend time building a response that has a coin-flip chance of working.

Smart Disputes won’t fix all of that. Friendly fraud is still rising. Dispute volumes are still climbing. The card networks are tightening their rules.

But it will remove the two biggest reasons merchants lose disputes they should have won: missing deadlines and not knowing what evidence to submit. Those are solvable problems. And Stripe is solving them.

June 2026. Automatic. No setup. 30% only when you win.

That’s a deal worth taking.

Stripe Smart Disputes will be automatically enabled on eligible accounts from June 2026. Review your settings at Stripe Dashboard → Radar → Dispute Management.
