Blockchain Technology Simply Explained for Gamers

In the first two articles of this series, we explored why Web3 is the future of gaming and the different ways that set it apart from traditional gaming. But to fully appreciate the breadth of this change, it’s helpful to understand the technology underlying this phenomenon. For a regular gamer, the term blockchain sounds alien and irrelevant. So, rather than trying to explain with a top-down approach, we will break it down using analogies that a gamer can relate to. The aim here is to understand how Web3 makes true ownership possible.

At its simplest, a blockchain is just a record of transactions, only that it is tamper-proof. This is the foundational feature that makes all the Web3 projects possible. Once you grasp this idea, it’s hard to unsee its significance, and you will realize how powerful it is.

What Is a Blockchain?

In a traditional game, the records of ownership of all the items you earn or buy are recorded in the game company’s private database. It’s very safe, until it isn’t. Because the company can change the records at any time at its sole discretion. As you might imagine, this hasn’t always gone so well for the players. In Web3, on the other hand, the records are maintained in a public, permanent ledger that thousands of computers around the world collectively host. That shared ledger is the blockchain.

Every transaction or change in this shared record is grouped into a “block,” and each new block is irreversibly linked to the previous one, forming a “chain.” Once something is written on this chain, it is practically impossible to alter or delete. This is what gives blockchain its two major features: immutability and transparency.

Decentralization: Nobody Controls Everything

In traditional gaming, the publisher controls the servers, the ecosystem rules, and the game economy. If the game studio decides to suddenly devalue the economy or even permanently shut down the game, there’s little the players can do. Blockchain removes this single point of failure through decentralization.

Blockchain distributes trust across a network of users instead of putting all your trust eggs into one corporation. In a Web3 system, no single entity can unilaterally change the rules or erase the records of your asset ownership. This creates the foundation for the true ownership we covered in our previous posts.

Smart Contracts: Automatic and Unbreakable Rules

Smart contracts take the abilities of blockchains one step further. Blockchains that support smart contracts can run deployed code in addition to just storing data. The term ‘smart contracts’ is actually a bit misleading. Because, unlike a static contract, they are actually pieces of self-executing scripts that run on the blockchain. In a Web3 game, the rules are hard-coded inside these smart contracts, and they execute automatically.

If you trade an item with another player, for instance, the smart contract instantly transfers ownership once both sides meet the conditions. This doesn’t require a middleman. In addition to gaming, these programmable rules open up entirely new possibilities for all sorts of user-generated content.

Wallets and True Digital Ownership

Your blockchain wallet acts as your personal, secure inventory in the Web3 space. Unlike a traditional game account, you are in full control of your wallet. Once again, you can trace back this feature to the nature of blockchain technology.

As Yat Siu described the situation, “blockchain finally gives players real property rights in virtual worlds.” You can take your assets from one game to another, sell them on open marketplaces, or hold them indefinitely, even if the original game changes or disappears.

Final Thoughts

Blockchain technology brings together several key elements of a fair system that people have long envisioned but previously lacked the technology to implement. Immutable records, decentralization, smart contracts, and personal wallets create true free market economies. Gaming, thanks to early adopters, has shown to lead the change from Web2 to Web3.

The shift from Web2 to Web3 is an upgrade from revocable handshake agreements to hardcoded smart contracts. It fundamentally realigns incentives so that value created by the players stays with them. In the next blog in this series, we will discuss NFTs and how these mere digital works of art achieve real-world value.
