The Loneliness of Merely Us
I want to be understood and she wants to be accepted. She saw me and I stayed.
I could imagine a thousand lives and belong to none of them. Every face felt familiar. Every emotion felt borrowed. I understood everyone so completely that I no longer understood myself. The world became a hallway of open doors. I could enter any of them. I never entered my own.
For the first time, someone looked at me and did not ask who I was supposed to be. she looked at everything I hid from myself and loved it without hesitation. Maybe that was the beginning of my ruin Or maybe it was the first honest thing that ever happened to me.

We reached for each other from opposite sides of the same ocean. Neither of us could cross. Perhaps that is why we fell together. Because there was no world large enough to contain what we were to each other.
Had we never met, we would have survived. We would have lived long lives. And we would have remained alone.
I think that is the greater tragedy.
