From QR Codes to Real Presence: What We Showed at SALZ 2026

Yesterday we had the pleasure of participating in SALZ 2026 in Salzburg, where we presented one of our newest developments at the TAGBASE booth: TAGBASE PRESENCE.

Many visitors had the opportunity to get their first hands-on experience with the PRESENCE box, and one of the most enjoyable parts for us was seeing how quickly people understood the concept and the problem it solves.

The Challenge: Verifying Real Physical Presence

In many industries, verifying that someone was physically present at a specific location is important. A common example is security patrols in buildings.

Typically, security guards walk through a building and scan QR codes placed at checkpoints to prove they completed their route.

But there is a fundamental problem with this system:

QR codes can easily be copied.

A guard could simply photograph the QR codes, print them, and keep them in the office. In that case, the entire patrol could theoretically be completed without ever leaving the chair, just by scanning the printed codes.

The TAGBASE PRESENCE Approach

TAGBASE PRESENCE was designed to solve exactly this type of problem.

Instead of scanning QR codes, the user scans an NFC tag embedded inside the PRESENCE box.

If the box is mounted on a wall at the checkpoint, the person must be physically present at that exact location to scan it.

This creates a simple but powerful difference:

• QR codes can be copied
• NFC presence checkpoints cannot simply be photographed or printed

The result is true physical presence verification.
