PayPal, co-founded in 1998 by Elon Musk, currently holds the title of the world’s largest third-party payment service provider. In Taiwan, PayPal partners with E. Sun Commercial Bank, offering customers the convenience of withdrawing both US dollars from PayPal and Taiwan dollars through E. Sun Bank’s Global Connect Service.
Since 2020, PayPal has ventured into the cryptocurrency market, empowering customers to seamlessly engage in buying, selling, and holding cryptocurrencies. August 2023 marked a significant milestone for PayPal with the official release of its stablecoin, PYUSD (PayPal USD).
During the Consensus conference on May 29 of this year, PayPal announced its partnership with Solana. Notably, PYUSD currently holds the seventh position in market value, with Paxos as its issuer and a circulation of $3.99 billion, standing in contrast to USDT’s issuance of $112 billion.
The development journey of PayPal’s stablecoin, PYUSD, commenced in 2020 with the deployment of cryptocurrency payment functions, providing customers with a seamless checkout experience powered by advanced blockchain technology.
PayPal wallets now offer expanded functionality, enabling US customers to engage in buying, holding, and selling cryptocurrencies. Through Paxos’s development efforts, crypto payment functionality has expanded to the UK and EU, empowering customers to transact with PYUSD on Ethereum or Solana using PayPal and Venmo wallets, as well as Ledger wallets and MetaMask.
PYUSD, leveraging the Ethereum ERC-20 standard and multiple blockchains, supports various blockchain applications. Tailored for Web3, it facilitates transactions across exchanges, wallets, decentralized applications (dApps), and NFT markets, while also providing developers with the opportunity to integrate PYUSD into their products, thereby bridging traditional banking services with the world of cryptocurrencies.
PayPal wallets are equipped to receive stablecoins from other platforms and facilitate diverse financial operations such as payroll management, payments, invoice settlements, bill payments, and cross-border transactions.
In contrast to USDC and USDT, which often find utility in staking within DeFi ecosystems, PYUSD prioritizes commercial applications, expediting cross-border transactions between the US, UK, and EU. Furthermore, PYUSD can seamlessly move between Ethereum or Solana addresses, enhancing its flexibility and usability.
PYUSD transactions are conducted via PayPal and Venmo at a 1:1 ratio, with some eligible US customers enjoying fee waivers. For businesses, PYUSD presents a tool to manage costs, expenses, and mitigate the impact of inflation and cross-border transaction fees.
The partnership between PayPal and Solana marks a significant step towards integrating PYUSD into the global commercial landscape. Leveraging Solana’s blockchain, customers benefit from faster and cost-effective transactions. Early adopters such as Crypto.com, Phantom, and Paxos enable the transfer of SOL to PayPal, further expanding PYUSD’s accessibility and utility.
Looking ahead, predictable opportunities include the emergence of new tokenomic models within GameFi, the Metaverse, NFT markets, and creator subscriptions, indicating a promising future for PYUSD and its ecosystem.
