Know yourself

Deep self-awareness, or self-knowledge, is the key to getting to the heart of what makes us tick and what truly matters to us. Socrates said, ‘Know thyself,’ but it is surprising how few of us are ready to be authentic. It is a message we hear often, but some find it easier than others — especially in a work situation, where we may have cultivated a persona without even realizing it, perhaps to maintain an identity that is different from the one at home. We are not just our thoughts; we are a summation of our past experiences, our parents’ values and expectations, society’s expectations, and many other factors. For this reason, being true to ourselves — essentially doing what matters — is not black and white.
When it comes down to it, however, the power of knowing yourself — if you will — is that it gives greater meaning to your life. Meaning is really what we all seek. After all, what is the point without it? What else matters?
What does it all mean? Once we can lead lives with real meaning, we will automatically become more focused. These two exist hand in hand, parallel to one another. By being focused, we find meaning; and once we have meaning, we can focus. So, how does one find meaning? Asking yourself basic questions may be a good place to start. They may be more difficult than you think, but if you spend some time on them, the results could be hugely enlightening.
