WORDSMITHS’ WEEKLY PROMPTS— THE ULTIMATE SANDWICH

Go Ahead: Use that Panini Grill and Risk Ruining Everything

Who knew food preferences can be so divisive

My ultimate sandwich is a curried chicken wrap with little itty bitty morsels of raisins in it.

Before everyone roars in outrage, paws open jars of face paint and declares war — I know, I know — I just initiated the next food debate since THE GREAT PINEAPPLE ON PIZZA CONTROVERSY.

Sure, not everyone likes sweet and savoury flavours together, but why does this have to become a grand divide that can rip best friends and households apart?

I don’t think I can solve that question here.

But I can tell you that I bat on the salty-sweet team.

What is this wrap anyhow?

It should have been patented!

My old friend Christopher worked with me about 22 years ago and we would meet up for our lunch breaks. Our destination was usually the modest basement take-out deli.

We underestimated them.

They were just culinary geniuses.

The assembled deliciousness was comprised of —

  1. Soft plain tortilla
  2. Just a little shredded lettuce
  3. Cubed chicken with mayonnaise and curry
  4. Dotted with little dark raisins
  5. Lastly, a handful of alfalfa sprouts

One might say alfalfa was a trendy addition, or we can just admit that they know how to weave food sorcery.

Swoon.

Hint of spice, savoury and sweet — mmmmm

Just five items all rolled in one to give your tastebuds a little happy dance.

It’s like all these ingredients were singing together in a perfect little string-quintet.

Note that I did not mention heating the assembled wrap. Nowadays, society has an unnatural preoccupation with torturing perfect sandwiches in between horrifying hot jaws — more commonly known as panini grills.

Onwards to another controversial topic —

To CHAR or not to CHAR?

Why the obsession with burning things?

Why do we have to put an innocent little sandwich through a trial-by-fire?

Leave it alone.

I prefer mine lily-beige. It was a source of lively debates in my household, as my husband scoffed and haughtily said “It’s just a little Maillard reaction,” pronouncing “my-YARD” ever so slowly and correctly.

Whatever, Chef.

I’ll see your my-YARD with my umami. I know fancy words too.

Perhaps memories get moulded and reshaped as we age. I recall those were simpler times with a just a little chicken curry sandwich and good company.

What’s your ultimate sandwich?
