TiO₂ Market May Hold Firm in April, but Uncertainty Is Growing

In early April, the TiO₂ market looks calm on the surface, but there’s a lot happening underneath. Several producers, including CITIC Titanium, Yibin Tianyuan, and Haifengxin, have implemented price increases of USD 150–200/ton. In fact, more producers have already followed, while some are holding back orders and waiting for further price adjustments. A few have even canceled earlier low-priced deals, reflecting the tight and uncertain market situation.

Recently, sulfate-process rutile TiO₂ has been trading above USD 2,300/ton in the end market. With sulfur and sulfuric acid remaining expensive, producers have no choice but to keep prices high. At the same time, maintenance shutdowns among major producers have reduced overall supply, and some are already signaling potential increases of up to USD 300/ton.

After several rounds of price increases, order volumes are now declining. Many buyers had already built up inventory earlier, pulling forward demand that may cover the next two to three months. At the same time, the market is showing signs of fatigue toward continuous price hikes.

From a market perspective, the market now needs a more balanced approach. Buyers are becoming more cautious, avoiding panic buying and chasing prices. On the supply side, overly frequent or aggressive price increases may risk exhausting demand. If demand is pulled forward too much, it could lead to a sharp correction later, which remains a key risk to watch.

Now, with tensions easing in the Middle East, what changes for China’s TiO₂market?

Iran is a major sulfur producer, and the Middle East accounts for 25–30% of global sulfur supply. China gets about 56% of its sulfur imports from the Middle East. As the situation stabilizes, sulfur and sulfuric acid prices are likely to come down. That would lower production costs for sulfate-process TiO2. Energy costs like oil and natural gas will probably follow, reducing expenses for manufacturers. Freight and shipping rates should also normalize. It won’t happen overnight, but the direction is clear: cost pressure will ease gradually. Prices may stay high for a while, then stabilise, and eventually edge down. With less pressure to deliver expensive raw materials against low-priced orders, supply stability will improve. Export orders, especially from the Middle East, could recover as well. Some of the volume that shifted away during the crisis may come back.

All of this suggests the market is gradually moving back toward balance. Meanwhile, early selling from inventory holders is adding volatility to prices. Buyers will need to be more cautious about where their supply comes from.

Outlook

According to Titanos market analysts, the current market is no longer following typical patterns. With everything that’s been happening lately, the TiO₂market is getting much harder to read.

Price adjustments are happening at different times across producers, creating the impression of continuous increases. Traditionally, TiO₂prices tend to move in line with titanium ore, but the current situation is different: TiO₂prices are rising while ore prices are softening.

Cost support from sulfur and sulfuric acid remains strong, so producers still have the intention to raise prices. However, as prices move higher, demand is slowing and buyers are becoming more cautious.

In the short term, the April market is likely to remain firm. Producers are expected to adjust prices more flexibly based on their own situation. Supply may stay tight, with both premiums and occasional discounted offers appearing in the market.

As always, final prices will depend on volumes, delivery terms, and payment conditions.
