From Maps to Spatial Intelligence: Our Journey Building a Campus Navigation & AR Guidance Platform

From a distance, campus navigation appears to be a simple problem: place locations on a map and guide users from one point to another.

Our research journey proved otherwise.

As Project X Team began investigating the challenge of building a Campus Navigation & AR Guidance platform, we quickly discovered that navigation systems involve spatial intelligence, route optimization, location-aware databases, and real-time positioning.

The project led us into technologies such as OpenStreetMap, GeoJSON, GIS databases, PostGIS, route engines, AR navigation concepts, and route-scanning methodologies.

One of the most valuable lessons was understanding the limitations of traditional data storage approaches for location-based systems. We learned how spatial databases enable advanced capabilities such as nearest-neighbor searches, route calculations, polygon operations, and geographic indexing.

After evaluating multiple options, we established a technology stack built around HTML5, JavaScript, OSRM, Hono.js, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, Redis, and Cloudflare.

While the research phase provided technical clarity, it also reinforced the importance of collaborative problem-solving and continuous learning.

With the foundation now established, Project X Team is moving into the development phase.
