LVM3(Launch Vehicle Mk III) — Medium

LVM3

LVM3

The Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, often known as the GSLV (Launch Vehicle Mark III), is a three-stage heavy lift launch vehicle that was created by the ISRO. The heaviest satellites that this launch vehicle is capable of lifting are. The GSLV Mk III, also known as the LMV, was created with a specific purpose in mind. These objectives, as well as the LMV’s productive launches, payload capability, and engines, are described on the page below.

LVM or GSLV Mk III Objectives

Compared to the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), the most productive launch vehicle for ISRO, LVM Mk-III has higher thrust.

The objectives for GSLV Mk III’s development are listed below.

  • to orbit more substantial communication satellites
  • to launch larger, more versatile spacecraft into orbit
  • Travel between planets in the future
  • to begin the launch of impending crewed missions, or space travel.

Vehicle Specifications for the LVM Mk III

  • Height: 43.5 m
  • Vehicle Diameter: 4.0 m
  • Heat Shield (Payload Fairing) Diameter: 5.0 m
  • Number of Stages: 3
  • Lift-Off Mass: 640 tonnes

Technical Specification for LVM Mk III

→ Here is a simplified explanation of Technical Specification

  1. GTO payload: 4,000 kg
  2. LEO (Low Earth Orbit) payload: 8,000 kg
  3. Upper Cryogenic Stage: C25
  4. Boosters for solid rockets: S200
  5. Core Stage: Liquid Stage L110

(1). GTO payload: 4,000 kg

→ The GSAT series’ 4-tonne class satellites can be launched into geosynchronous transfer orbits by LVM3.

(2). LEO (Low Earth Orbit) payload: 8,000 kg

→ LVM3’s potent cryogenic stage makes it possible to launch large payloads into Low Earth Orbits with an altitude of 600 km.

(3). Upper Cryogenic Stage: C25

→ The largest cryogenic engine in India, the CE-20, which was created and built by the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, powers the C25.

  • Cryo Stage Height: 13.5 m
  • Cryo Stage Diameter: 4.0 m
  • Engine: CE-20
  • Fuel: 28 tonnes of LOX + LH2

(4). Boosters for solid rockets: S200

→ The massive amount of thrust needed for takeoff is provided by two S200 solid rocket boosters, which are used by LVM3.

→ The Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre was where the S200 was created.

  • Booster Height: 25 m
  • Booster Diameter: 3.2 m
  • Fuel: 205 tonnes of HTPB (nominal)

(5). Core Stage: Liquid Stage L110

→ Two Vikas engines created and developed at the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre power the L110 liquid stage.

  • Stage Height: 21 m
  • Stage Diameter: 4.0 m
  • Engine: 2 x Vikas
  • Fuel: 115 tonnes of UDMH + H2O

Launch of LVM Mk III

→ The GSLV Mk III has been successfully launched numerous times so far.

→ Below is a list of the items.

  • Launched in December 2014, CARE stands for Crew Module Atmospheric Re-entry Mission.
  • The GSAT-19 Mission was started in June 2017.
  • The GSAT-29 Mission was launched in November 2018.
  • It was a moon expedition called Chandrayaan 2. 2019 saw its premiere.
  • OneWeb: In October 2022, 36 OneWeb satellites were successfully launched by the first LVM3 commercial launch.
  • OneWeb: OneWeb’s second official commercial launch. most substantial load ever launched by an LVM3 and ISRO. The project got underway in March 2023.
