The Shepherd of Nagda: Why History Got Bappa Rawal Wrong
A 14-year deep dive into the archives reveals that Mewar’s greatest founder didn’t start in a palace — he started with a mystery in the forest.
History is often curated to highlight the finality of battles and the grandeur of thrones. But as a historian who has spent the last 14 years pouring over primary texts like Veer Vinod, Rajputane Ka Itihas, and Nainsi Ri Khyat, I have learned that the most resilient legacies are never born in palaces. They are born in the quietest, most humble corners of the wilderness.
Today, I want to talk about Bappa Rawal — or as he was known before history immortalized him — Kalbhoj.
The Mystery of the Shyama Cow
In the 8th century, in the dense forests of Nagda, a young boy named Kalbhoj tended to cattle. He wasn’t a prince in hiding; he was a shepherd with a sharp, observant mind.
His life changed when he noticed an unexplained pattern: a ‘Shyama’ cow would wander away from the herd every single day, disappearing deep into the woods to shed its milk at a hidden, unmarked spot. Most would have dismissed it as a quirk of nature. Kalbhoj, however, saw it as a mystery that demanded an answer.
His curiosity led him to clear away wild Bilva leaves, revealing a Swayambhu (self-manifested) Shivling. This simple act of observation and reverence laid the spiritual foundation for what we now know as the Eklingnath Ji temple — the heart of Mewar’s identity.
Leadership is Earned, Not Inherited
Before Kalbhoj ever sought to lead an empire, he sought a mentor. He found his guide in Harit Rishi, a practitioner of the Pashupat tradition.
Kalbhoj understood a fundamental truth that many modern leaders forget: True authority is earned through service. He didn’t carry the title ‘Bappa’ because of royal blood; he earned it through years of silent devotion and service. When his mentor finally blessed him, he called him Bappa — meaning ‘Father’ or ‘Protector’ — marking him as the man who would take responsibility for the lives of his people.
The Liberation of 734 AD
By the time Bappa Rawal set his sights on Chittod, the region was suffocating under the weight of external invasions led by figures like Junaid Khan. The local population was being decimated by economic exploitation and the horrors of the slave trade.
Acting on his mentor’s vision, Bappa mobilized the people and liberated Chittod in 734 AD. He didn’t just conquer a fort; he restored dignity to a region that had been brought to its knees.
Rewriting the Narrative
History books often gloss over the extent of Bappa Rawal’s counter-offensive. He didn’t just defend the borders of Mewar; he chased the invaders across the Indus, deep into the heart of Afghanistan, reaching as far as Ghazni.
The city of Rawalpindi in modern-day Pakistan stands today as a silent, enduring testament to his military encampments. He introduced gold coinage, signaling a new era of economic sovereignty. Yet, for reasons that deserve their own deep investigation, these chapters are often minimized or omitted from mainstream historical discourse.

The Diwan’s Legacy
To this day, the rulers of Mewar consider themselves the Diwans (custodians) of Eklingnath Ji. This tradition didn’t start in a palace; it started in a forest cave with a boy who knew how to observe, how to serve, and how to protect.
History is not just about what happened; it’s about why it happened. My mission with ‘Real Hi(story)’ is to bridge the gap between myth, folklore, and the documented reality.
