India Wanted to Buy a Supercomputer. They Were Denied. So They Built Their Own

In the late 1980s, India planned to buy one of the most advanced supercomputers in the world: the Cray Y-MP. The contract was signed, funding approved, installation scheduled.

Within three years, the newly created C-DAC center built PARAM 8000, India’s first gigaflop-class parallel supercomputer.
