So I found out something last week that genuinely annoyed me.
Apple announced watchOS 27 and along with all the exciting new features, they quietly dropped support for a bunch of older Apple Watch models. And mine is one of them.
If you’re in the same boat, let me walk you through exactly what’s happening and what it actually means for your watch.
Which Watches Got Cut?
Here’s the list of what’s getting dropped this year:
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
- Apple Watch Series 8
- Apple Watch SE (2nd generation)
- Apple Watch Ultra (1st generation)
If you own any of these, watchOS 27 simply isn’t coming to your wrist. No update. Not now, not later.
And here’s what’s actually still supported going forward:
- Apple Watch SE (3rd generation)
- Apple Watch Series 9
- Apple Watch Series 10
- Apple Watch Series 11
- Apple Watch Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Ultra 3
If your watch isn’t on that second list, you’re done getting new features from Apple.
Okay But Why? Apple Actually Explained It.
This part actually surprised me.
Apple didn’t just quietly drop support and move on they had Cait Dooley, who’s their Apple Watch and Health Product Marketing Manager, sit down and explain the reasoning directly.
Apple wants every device running their software to actually run it well. Not just technically work, but genuinely feel good to use.
According to Dooley, the new features in watchOS 27 particularly Siri AI and the new tap gesture need a certain level of processing power to actually run properly.
And the older chips inside Series 6, 7, 8, the SE 2, and the original Ultra just don’t have what’s needed.
So rather than force those features onto hardware that can’t handle them properly and give people a laggy, frustrating experience, Apple decided to just hold the line at Series 9 and newer.
I get the logic. Doesn’t make it less annoying if your watch happens to be on the wrong side of that line though.
Is My Old Apple Watch Suddenly Unsafe to Use?
This is the part that actually worried me the most when I first heard about this. So I want to be really clear here because the answer matters.
No. Your watch is not suddenly dangerous or unusable.
Dooley specifically addressed this. Older Apple Watch models that don’t get watchOS 27 will still be able to pair with iPhones running the newest version of iOS.
And critically they’ll still continue receiving security updates.
So your watch isn’t getting abandoned in some unsafe state. It’s just not getting the new feature set. Big difference.
You can keep wearing it, keep using it daily, keep tracking your workouts and notifications, and it’ll still be protected from a security standpoint.
What you won’t get is Siri AI, the new tap gesture, the dynamic app grid, and the other new stuff coming in this update.
What Are You Actually Missing Out On?
If your watch didn’t make the cut, here’s a quick look at what watchOS 27 brings that you won’t get.
Siri AI with its own dedicated app
basically the same massive Siri overhaul coming to iPhone, just adapted for your wrist. Faster, smarter, more conversational.
A new dynamic app grid
your home screen layout actually adjusts itself based on what you use most.
Improvements to Workout Buddy
the AI coaching feature that talks you through workouts gets smarter and more useful.
There’s a handful of other smaller improvements too, but those three are the headline features that older devices simply won’t get access to.
So Should You Upgrade?
Honestly that depends on how attached you are to the newer features.
If your Apple Watch still does everything you personally need tracks your workouts fine, shows your notifications fine, battery still holds up there’s no urgent reason to rush out and buy a new one.
Your watch isn’t broken. It’s not unsafe. It’s just frozen in time feature-wise.
But if you’ve been eyeing Siri AI or want that smarter Workout Buddy experience, that’s basically Apple’s way of nudging you toward a Series 9 or later, an SE 3, or an Ultra 2 or 3.
When Does This Actually Happen?
watchOS 27 is in developer beta right now. Public beta arrives in July. Full release for everyone hits this fall.
So if your watch is still supported, you’ve got some time before you need to think about updating. If it’s not supported well, now you know exactly what you’re working with and why.
Annoying timing for me personally since I wasn’t planning on a new Apple Watch this year.
But at least now I understand exactly why this happened instead of just being confused about it.
