Technology has been growing at another level, such as artificial intelligence. As humans we must adapt and wisely choose the right information that we get from the internet. Unfortunately, we just talk about how cool technology is today. We rarely talk about the impact of technology to our business. And the question is

Does the latest technology really need our company?

In this section, I want to talk about business’s perspective on technology today, especially the Internet of Things (IoT). IoT technology enables the devices to be controlled, monitored and collected. Also interaction between machine to machine, machine to human over the internet. IoT may be an industrial revolution that can change our behavior and how we work. As an IoT engineer in the transportation industry, I want to give a use case from my work.

What do we really do in this Industry? Here the things what we do :

1. Real-time tracking Developing the device can send current location to our system.
2. Fleet management system Creating a system to monitor, control and collect data.
3. Driver behavior Analyzing driver behavior to improve our customer satisfaction.
4. Preventive maintenance Collecting data from vehicles that we can analyze to make scheduling maintenance.

Above are the things I can do as an IoT engineer in the transportation industry. As we know, one of the biggest taxi companies in Indonesia has a tagline “Standar Nyaman Indonesia(SNI)”. As an IoT engineer, we find what the data can contribute to improve our company value. Here the tips to define how the technology can match with business need:

1. Company needs Standar Nyaman Indonesia (SNI)
2. Goals Customer’s safety and satisfaction
3. Product solutions Driver behavior based on vehicle speed. For example when speed data is unstable, this may indicate the driver is not driving safely and comfortably.
4. Tech solutions Get speed data from vehicles periodically and store them in a database. Also creating a system can classify driver behavior.

That is an example we can match the technology with our business needs. As an engineer we just do not learn the latest technology, but we match if the technology is needed for our company or not. Sometimes companies do not need fancy technology, they need the tech solution that can tackle problems and create revenue.

So, that is my perspective about how technology and business can walk together. Hopefully, this can open our perspective as an engineer.
