I’m an Electronics Engineer Who Fell in Love With Design Systems — And Yes, It’s Serious

How modular circuits taught me to become obsessed with tokens, variants, and consistent button states.

I used to spend my college days soldering tiny components on breadboards and debugging why a simple LED wouldn’t glow. Four years of Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering at COEP taught me one sacred truth: chaos is expensive.

Then I entered UI/UX design.

Suddenly I was staring at 47 shades of “primary blue”, 12 versions of the same button, and layer names that looked like they were generated by a drunk cat walking on the keyboard. The trauma was real.

During my internship at Strategic Ventures, I was building interfaces for a live healthcare SaaS. One day I opened the file and found three different Card components, each doing its own thing. I felt the same panic I used to feel when a circuit refused to work because of one loose connection.

That’s when I truly understood the beauty of Design Systems.

A well-built design system is basically the adult, digital version of what I loved about electronics — modularity, reusability, and predictability.

Just like how a resistor is a resistor no matter which circuit board you put it on, a proper Button/Primary/Large component should behave the same everywhere. No surprises. No midnight “Can you just quickly change this one button?” messages from developers.

What makes me a certified Design Systems nerd now?

• I get excited when I see perfectly named tokens ( — color-primary-500, not blue-1)
• I smile when Auto Layout actually works
• I feel genuine joy when a component update doesn’t break 23 screens

My friends think I’ve lost it when I say things like “This spacing is not 16px… it’s disrespectful.”

But here’s the thing — after spending months maintaining consistency across 40+ screens in a real product, I’ve realized that great design systems aren’t about perfection. They’re about respect — respect for the user, the developer, the designer who will open this file six months later, and your own future self who will forget why you did what you did.

Design Systems didn’t just organize my designs. They healed my inner engineer who always wanted things to be logical, scalable, and maintainable.

And honestly? I’ve never been more turned on by consistency in my life.
