Tainan: Why This 400-Year-Old City is the Soul of Taiwan

Tainan Station: Your gateway to the oldest and most charming city in Taiwan.

When travelers think of Asia, they often imagine giant skyscrapers and fast-moving technology. But in Taiwan, there is a city that moves to a different beat. Tainan, located in the south, is a place where 「400 years of history」 and 「modern daily life」 live on the exact same street.

Where the Story Began

Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan. Its story started in 1624 when the Dutch arrived and built Fort Zeelandia (today’s Anping Fort). Later, it became a major center for politics and trade.

In Tainan, history isn’t just in schoolbooks – it is right in front of you. You can walk past Chihkan Tower, a beautiful structure from the 17th century, while locals ride their scooters to work nearby. This mix of old and new is everywhere.

History is Daily Life

Many famous cities in Asia put their history in museums or 「tourist zones.」 But Tainan is different. Our history is not separated from us.

An ancient temple might sit right next to a busy breakfast shop. Students and families visit these temples every day, not as tourists, but as part of their routine. You don’t need to buy a ticket to a museum to feel the layers of time; you just need to walk down a small alley.

The Food Capital of Taiwan

If you ask any Taiwanese person where to find the best food, they will say 「Tainan.」 With over a thousand street food stalls and night markets, the city is a paradise for food lovers.

• Fresh Beef Soup: Many shops start cooking early in the morning, serving the freshest soup you can imagine.
• Night Markets: These are the heart of social life, where friends and families meet to eat and talk.

A City at the Right Scale

With a population of about 1.8 million, Tainan is not a giant “megacity.” This makes it very charming. The city center is easy to explore by bicycle or on foot.

One of my favorite places is Shennong Street（神農街）. It is an old street with traditional houses. In the evening, when the red lanterns are lit, the whole street feels warm and quiet. It is the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere.

Hayashi Department Store（林百貨）: Once the first department store in Tainan (1932), it is now a trendy part of local life.

Why Tainan Matters Today

While many Asian cities focus on speed and size, Tainan focuses on depth. From the sea trade of 1624 to the busy night markets of today, this city lets stories from different centuries exist at the same time.

The tight connection between history, religion, amazing food, and daily life makes Tainan a place you can’t find anywhere else in Asia. If you want to see the 「real」 Taiwan, you must come to the south.
