The Watchlist — Week Beginning 22 June 2014 — Televised Revolution

It’s a quiet week on TV, but it isn’t without a couple of very notable shows making their debuts this week. The most high profile are the Michael Bay produced action series The Last Ship, and the intriguing big budget series Tyrant — a show that has supposedly had a very rough production. For pure nostalgia, 90210 stars are back on the screen this week, along with the Boy Meets World sequel series.

This week also sees the return of several series including Teen Wolf, True Blood, Falling Skies, Covert Affairs, and Wilfred.

The Last Ship (Series Debut) Airs: 22 June — TNT (US) Nothing about The Last Ship looks to be anything less than completely ridiculous. And that’s more than okay at times. This series stars Rhona Mitra (Boston Legal), Adam Baldwin (Firefly, Chuck), and Eric Dane (Grey’s Anatomy) as humanity’s last hope on board a US Navy guided missile destroyer as they hunt for a cure to a disease that has ravaged humanity.

Tyrant (Series Debut) Airs: 24 June — FX (US) Homeland and Hatufim creator Gideon Raff again teams with Homeland producer Howard Gordon for this big budget event series from FX which has been dogged by bad publicity surrounding its difficult production. Tyrant concerns a man who returns to his fictional home nation Abbudin after living in the US for the past 20 years. Upon his return he finds himself embroiled in the national and family politics he left behind.

Superstar DJ’s with Annie Mac Airs: 25 June — Channel 4 (UK) A backstage doco that explores the phenomenon of the DJ. UK correspondent Jen Knight dared me to get through the preview for this without punching my laptop. I failed.

Mystery Girls (Series Debut) Airs: 25 June — ABC Family (US) Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth reunite to deliver their sparkling 90210 chemistry once more as two former TV actresses who fall into the world of private detectiving. It’s like Bored To Death, only not funny, moving, engaging, compelling, or charming in any way.

Beauty Queen or Bust Airs: 26th June — Channel 4 (UK) Airing the night after the doco about superstar DJ’s, this doco about beauty contest hopefuls must mean it’s “Awful C**t Week” on Channel 4.

Girl Meets World (Series Debut) Airs: 27 June — Disney Channel (US) Boy Meets World never quite had the same enthusiasm here in Australia as it was met with by viewers in the US, so its return means very little to us here. This strange nostalgia grab sees Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel reprise their Boy Meets World characters as they raise their own daughter — a girl who will presumably meet the world in some manner.
