Manifesto for Enterprise Agility

Matthew Ford Kern, 1/16/2026

We are uncovering better ways of operating in complex enterprises and endeavors by harnessing AI automation and helping others do the same. This new agility obeys constraints and avoids hubris. It is founded on seven axioms:

  1. Strategy can be augmented and accelerated, but not changed too often — to prevent strategic whiplash, erosion of coherence, trust, and long-term momentum.
  2. The SDLC (and broader unified lifecycle) can be automated and enhanced with AI, but not changed or discarded — as it is the inherent, inescapable structure of creation, evolution, and decommissioning of complex systems.
  3. Operational agility focuses on operational planning — enabling rapid adaptation to circumstances at the operational level (above tactics, informed by strategy) without disrupting strategic direction or tactical solution development.
  4. Governance cannot be discarded — for without robust oversight, accountability, and controls, corruption is enabled, legitimacy fractures, and systemic decline follows.
  5. Contracts are a core part of Western civilization and cannot be discarded or replaced — pacta sunt servanda (“agreements must be kept”) is the bedrock of high-trust cooperation, enforceable obligations, and voluntary exchange; undermining it erodes the foundations of trust, property, capitalism, and civilized order.
  6. Quality, technical excellence, and engineering discipline are non-negotiable — continuous attention to technical excellence and good design enhances agility; sacrificing craft for speed leads to fragility, high TCO, and collapse.
  7. Agility requires appropriate structure, leadership, and controls — it is not anti-hierarchy, anti-process, or anti-authority; true agility thrives with networked command and control, shared awareness, and leadership, not anarchy or ritualistic empowerment theater.

Viewing an enterprise as a system, we have come to value:

· AI automation and agentic execution over human rituals and ceremonial processes Operational agility (with flexible plans at the operational level) over rigid or scenario-locked approaches Shared awareness through intelligent networks over siloed hierarchies

· Organizational outcomes over project outputs. Contractual integrity and pacta sunt servanda over contract negotiation relativism Augmented adaptation over following any rigid ritual or sprint cycle — while preserving the essential SDLC as the natural, irreducible lifecycle of product and system development

Principles Behind Operational Agility

  1. Prioritize accelerating the decision cycle of operational planning via situational awareness.

  2. Leave strategy alone, it is not agile in nature. It is symbolic culture.

  3. Automate and enhance the SDLC with AI rather than trying to change the nature of reality.

  4. Automate and enhance governance with AI rather than bypassing it.

  5. Honor your agreements, or negotiate changes respecting both parties.

  6. Augment humans rather than replacing them.

  7. Champion quality, excellence and engineering rigor rather than attempting to redefine them.
