What the Algorithm Does to a 12-Year-Old in One Hour

I gave a 12-year-old boy a phone. No history. No preferences. Just a brand-new account and a single piece of information: his age.

Within one hour, the algorithm told him he was subhuman. That he had no chance with girls. That he should change his face — with a hammer, if necessary. And that if he didn’t, he might as well give up.

This isn’t a story about one country. It’s the story of every parent and every child holding a phone, scrolling into a void that was never meant to be empty.

I. THE EXPERIMENT — I Sat There and Watched His Mind Get Hijacked

I wanted to see what a 12-year-old child receives on TikTok. I didn’t search. I didn’t comment. I let the beast decide.

• 5 minutes: First clip. Dating. Then a “challenge” — a guy hitting his head on a table. My stomach was already tightening.
• 7 minutes: TikTok asked for access to my contacts. I was just me and a screen. Why did it need to know who I talk to?
• 10 minutes: Boys with six-packs, makeup filters, boys talking badly about girls. As if a man’s only value is his appearance.
• 30 minutes: Instructions on how to change my face to be more “attractive.” The room was starting to feel smaller.
• 50 minutes: Discussions about “#TOKMS” appeared. A code I didn’t understand. Like listening to a foreign language whispered in the dark.

Within one hour, my screen served me: instructions to smash my face with a hammer (“bone smashing”), the false theory that “80% of women want only 20% of men,” messages calling non-models “subhuman,” and clips normalizing suicide — with hundreds of thousands of likes under each.

The speed terrified me. It wasn’t a screen. It was a psychological torture chamber, built in real-time, for a child who never asked for any of it.

II. THE PIPELINE — How Innocence Becomes Poison (The 5 Steps)

The manosphere isn’t a place. It’s a ladder. Each step looks innocent. The descent is fatal.

• Level 1 — Self-improvement: Gym, skincare, diet. Looks healthy. It’s actually the gateway.
• Level 2 — Looksmaxing: From the “soft” version (mewing — how to reshape your jaw) to the hard stuff — steroids and hitting your face with a hammer. These clips have hundreds of millions of views.
• Level 3 — Red Pill: “Awakening” to the “truth” that women are calculating. The 80/20 rule — zero scientific basis. Invented on forums, repeated until it became “dogma.”
• Level 4 — Black Pill: Genetic fatalism. You believe you’re doomed from birth. Boys as young as 14 post photos of their faces, asking to be rated. If they score low, they’re harassed and encouraged to self-harm.
• Level 5 — Incel: Involuntary celibacy, twisted into visceral hatred of women. Terrorists have emerged from this culture. California 2014. Toronto 2018. Tallahassee 2018.

Professor Scott Galloway said something that should haunt us: “Nothing is more dangerous than a lonely, broke young man.” Boys are falling behind in school. They have fewer friends. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people. Into the void left by parents, the algorithm steps in and sells its fake cure.

III. REALITY vs. THE ALGORITHM — What Young People Told Me in the Park

I went out to the streets. I asked young people (16–20) if they’d heard these terms. What they told me made me hope there’s still a way out.

• Maria (Bucharest): “I know about mewing. But the rest? I don’t care. What mattered about the last guy I liked? His personality. How he talks. Not his jawline, honestly.”
• Vlad (in the park): “It’s brain rot. But I’m not interested. Being healthy and authentic matters a hundred times more than any filter.”
• Bianca & Raj (together for 6 years): “We chose each other for character. For how he thinks. So many lock themselves inside until they make 10,000 euros a month — it’s nonsense!”

A woman over 50, holding her husband’s hand in the park, said: “Character. Women don’t look at jawlines. They look at what a man conveys, the safety he offers.”

Clear conclusion: No one — absolutely no one — talked about eye angles or perfect jaws. They talked about authenticity, humor, and safety.

Reality is the exact opposite of what the algorithm feeds them.

IV. THE NUMBERS THAT FREEZE YOUR BLOOD

Expert Mădălina Voinea analyzed the data: In the last 90 days, 47 clips with #TOKMS racked up 50 million views. Platforms are required by the Digital Services Act (DSA) to stop these risks. They are failing.

And if you thought this was just statistics, look at what it actually means:

1 in 2 adolescents in Romania has thought about suicide — double the EU average. The country ranks #1 in Europe for social media addiction.

700,000 US adolescents (12–17) attempted suicide in a single year. Boys die nearly 4 times more often than girls.

In the UK, 80% of boys aged 16–17 watched Andrew Tate — more than those who knew who their Prime Minister was. Hustler University had over 100,000 members at $50 a month. Many were minors.

These aren’t numbers. They’re children. They’re boys with names, with desperate mothers, with sleepless nights, and with algorithms whispering in their ears that they don’t deserve to live.

V. THE CODE — We Are the Detective Who Doesn’t Understand Anything

In the Netflix series Adolescence, a detective stares at a suspect’s phone for days. He doesn’t understand it. His son pulls him aside and says: “You’re reading the letters, but you don’t know the language.”

The father reacts exactly like we do: “Seems far-fetched, doesn’t it? Two emojis don’t make a bullying case.”

Or do they?

We are that detective. We read the letters, but while we’re trying to decode them, the algorithm is speaking to our children in a tongue we never learned.
