A day at 42 | SSEP 2018

Heya!

Today was a great day at 42 Coding School. The first and only peer school, without teachers or mentors. So, it works this way-

There are about 600 students at 42 and just 12 staff members to look after them. The staff mainly decides the companies that the school will let in. If a student encounters a problem, he is suggested to ask his right fellow first, then the left one and in case they both fail to answer your doubt, only then you should Google it. The school believes that this helps students interact better with each other and also helps everyone learn new things. Every week they get projects to work upon and the system also tracks the amount of time they all are putting in every day. The school is free for the ones who make it to it and it also looks after the accommodation for the selected students. Most of the students get placed before even completing their term.

There we met two students Curtis and David. They took us for a quick campus visit and shared their stories with us. Curtis Krommenhoek is a 19-year old guy who didn’t ever go to college and came straight to 42 right after his college. He’s ambitious and keeps talking about codes all the time.

David dropped out of college last November. He worked 90 hours a week to get into 42. He is a brilliant athlete as well. Make sure you check out some interesting videos of him on his public Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/dfordavey

Another mastermind we got to interact with was Sean Darsie. He is a PhD student who didn’t complete his further studies but came over to 42 after M.S. We played the cool VR Game he has created. That was very awesome and probably the coolest thing that enticed all of us. This is the picture we clicked with him:

All in all, a great day at interacting and making some useful contacts. Loved the place, the culture and the passion for code in every single person we met there. All were so happily sharing their ideas and projects they’ve been working upon. A thing I’ve got to learn from this visit- Share your idea with the intellectual people (not everyone), you’ll definitely get to know something new. Generally, people have a tendency of not sharing the idea they’re working upon, out of the fear that the other people may steal it and start working on it. But think of it this way, every intellectual person is working on some or the other idea. They can, in the worst case, steal your idea, but can’t steal your dedication and passion!
