Welcome back! In Part 1, we explored the CBC, liver enzymes, and cholesterol. In this article, we will be covering three more important blood tests that show up often — especially when you’re tired, gaining weight, or just feeling “off.”
These tests help you understand your energy, your oxygen supply, and how well your body is managing sugar. So if you’ve ever heard the words “thyroid,” “iron,” or “blood sugar” and felt confused, this article is for you.
1. Thyroid Function Tests — Your Energy Regulator

Thyroid Disorders
The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in your neck. As a hormone-producing gland, it plays a vital role in your health by regulating your metabolism — essentially, how your body uses energy.
When your thyroid produces too much or too little hormone — known as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism — it can affect nearly every part of your body. Once again, balance is the key.
While there are several ways to evaluate thyroid health (which I’ll cover in future posts), this article focuses specifically on thyroid blood tests.
These thyroid function tests include:
TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone): Although produced by the pituitary gland, not the thyroid itself, TSH is the main hormone we monitor. It tells your thyroid how much hormone to produce.
- High TSH = Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
- Low TSH = Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
T3 (Triiodothyronine):
- High T3 levels may indicate hyperthyroidism
- Low T3 levels may point to hypothyroidism
T4 (Thyroxine):
- Like T3, high T4 suggests hyperthyroidism, and low T4 suggests hypothyroidism
- T3 and T4 are usually tested together for a fuller picture
Thyroid Antibody Tests: The presence of certain antibodies can indicate autoimmune thyroid conditions, such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.
What to watch for:
Too much or too little thyroid hormone can negatively impact your health. What we aim for is hormonal balance, which ensures your body uses energy efficiently.
Common symptoms of thyroid disorders include:
- For hypothyroidism: Fatigue, weakness, constipation, weight gain, muscle aches, cold intolerance
- For hyperthyroidism: Restlessness, anxiety, irritability, rapid heartbeat, heat intolerance, weight loss
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s time to seek medical advice. And if you also have abnormal lab results, your doctor will likely recommend further evaluation.
Remember, early diagnosis is key — listen to your body. It often shows signs before you even realise something is off.
2. Ferritin and Iron — Your Body’s Oxygen Supply Check

Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in your body. It acts as your iron reserve, and maintaining the right level is essential for energy, brain function, and overall health. Once again, we see that balance matters.
Your blood iron levels might appear normal, even when your ferritin (iron storage) is running low. That’s why we measure both together at the same time — to catch early signs of deficiency before symptoms develop.
The causes behind changes in ferritin level may vary:
- Elevated ferritin may be due to: Chronic inflammation, alcohol use, obesity, hyperthyroidism, liver disease
- Low ferritin may suggest: Iron deficiency anaemia, heavy menstrual bleeding, poor dietary intake, gut issues (e.g., poor iron absorption due to celiac disease, IBD, etc.)
What to Watch For:
A small change in your ferritin levels doesn’t always mean something is wrong. Environmental factors like intense exercise, pregnancy, and diet can also affect results.
Common signs of imbalance:
- Low Ferritin/Iron: Fatigue, hair loss, dizziness, brain fog, cold hands/feet, shortness of breath
- High Ferritin: May be silent or reflect inflammation, liver issues, or metabolic disorders
Don’t Ignore These Common Risk Factors:
- Heavy periods?
- Vegan or vegetarian diet?
- Recently had a baby?
These are all common causes of iron depletion and often go unnoticed. Once again, early detection is important, so if any of these symptoms sound like you, it’s worth visiting your doctor and checking your ferritin and iron levels.
3. Blood Glucose & HbA1c — Your Sugar Story

Blood Sugar Level Fluctuation
Glucose, a form of sugar, is your body’s main source of energy. It’s absorbed from the food and drinks you consume and carried through your bloodstream to the organs and tissues that need it.
Your body constantly works to maintain a balance between glucose levels in the blood and how much is used. When this balance is disrupted, you may experience hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) — both of which can be harmful.
That’s why we check blood glucose levels — to catch imbalances early and monitor how well your body is handling sugar.
Why Blood Sugar Monitoring Matters:
- High glucose levels (hyperglycemia): May indicate diabetes, a serious but preventable metabolic and cardiovascular condition.
- Low glucose levels (hypoglycemia): Can result from diabetes medications, prolonged fasting, or excessive alcohol intake. Hypoglycemia is urgent — it requires immediate treatment, such as consuming something sweet.
By measuring your blood glucose and HbA1c, we can assess how your body manages sugar — both in the moment and over time.
- Fasting Blood Glucose: Measures blood sugar levels after 8–12 hours without eating. Often used to screen for diabetes or prediabetes.
- HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin): Reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. A higher value indicates sustained elevated blood sugar, even if your fasting blood sugar result appears normal.
What to Watch For:
Blood sugar levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day. However, certain factors increase your risk of long-term imbalance, including:
- Advanced age
- Lack of physical activity
- Being overweight or obese
- Family history of diabetes
- High blood pressure or high cholesterol
Many people have elevated blood sugar without any noticeable symptoms — especially during the prediabetic phase. That’s why routine screening is so important.
Early detection can make all the difference.
With timely lifestyle changes — like improved diet, regular exercise, and weight management — you can often reverse or delay the progression to diabetes and avoid long-term complications.
