The CIA Protocol for Remote Viewing and Astral Travel

3 Techniques You Can Try Yourself

In 1983, the CIA published a document that reads less like intelligence research… and more like a manual for leaving the human body.

“The Gateway Process.” was part of a broader initiative connected to Stargate Project — a classified program where the U.S. military explored whether psychic phenomena could be used for intelligence gathering.

It was based on techniques developed by Robert Monroe, founder of Monroe Institute. His work focused on one central idea: That human consciousness might not be limited to the physical body.

Using specific audio frequencies (known as Hemi-Sync), participants were trained to enter deeply altered states — states where they reported:

  • Leaving their physical body
  • Accessing non-local information
  • Experiencing something like expanded awareness

The CIA didn’t frame this as spirituality. They framed it as potential intelligence technology.

These programs weren’t fringe experiments in someone’s basement. They were funded. Studied. And classified. Until they weren’t.

Today, anyone can access the original documents through the CIA’s electronic reading room.

Which raises a strange question: If there was nothing there why spend years researching it?

Skeptics vs. Believers

Here’s where things get interesting. Mainstream science still doesn’t accept psychic phenomena as proven.

Remote viewing experiments, for example, produced mixed and inconsistent results. Some sessions seemed uncannily accurate. Others failed completely.

In the end, programs like Stargate were shut down. Officially, because they weren’t reliable enough.

But not because nothing happened.

A story I couldn’t explain

Years ago, during my college days, I worked as a waitress in a cabaret theater. The owner was one of those people you don’t question lightly — disciplined, successful, deeply respected.

One night, in a quiet moment, he told me something I didn’t know what to do with. He said his daughter had abilities. Not metaphorical ones. He claimed she could bend spoons. And that people connected to government research had reached out to study her.

I remember sitting there, trying to process it. Part of me dismissed it instantly. Another part of me couldn’t. Because this wasn’t someone who told stories for attention.

So what are we actually looking at?

It’s easy to jump to extremes with topics like this: Either “This proves psychic powers are real” or “This is all nonsense”.

But the truth sits in a much more uncomfortable place:

We don’t fully understand consciousness yet. Not even close.

Across cultures and history, abilities like telepathy, deep intuition and non-ordinary perception have been described again and again.

Ancient yogic traditions, for example, speak of siddhis — unusual abilities that can arise through deep meditation.

Modern science still struggles to fully explain these phenomena. But what matters most if you’re actually curious about this: States of consciousness can be trained. That’s not controversial.

Meditation, breathwork, sensory isolation — all of these can alter perception in very real ways. What those experiences mean? That’s where interpretation begins.

So… should you try it?

If there’s one takeaway from all of this, it’s not: “Go develop psychic powers.”

It’s this: The human mind is far less understood than we like to believe.

And exploring it — through meditation, awareness practices, or guided methods — can open doors most people never even realize exist.

Just don’t do it blindly. Working with altered states is powerful territory. And like anything powerful, it’s something you approach with awareness, not obsession.

If you strip away the secrecy and technical language, the programs explored something surprisingly simple:

How to shift human consciousness on command.

Here are three core methods they used — translated into something you can actually experience.

These methods were studied because they sometimes produced unusual results. Not because they worked reliably.

You might feel something profound. You might feel nothing at all.

Both are completely normal.

1. Hemispheric Synchronization — The Gateway Method

Developed by Robert Monroe, this was the foundation of the Gateway Process. The goal wasn’t “magic” — it was creating a deeply altered state of awareness where the analytical mind quiets down and perception becomes unusually vivid.

The idea:

Your brain has two hemispheres — left and right. The Gateway Process used sound frequencies known as binaural beats to help synchronize brain activity and guide participants into altered states of consciousness.

Many people describe this state as feeling halfway between meditation and dreaming.

How to try it:

  • Use headphones — binaural beats work by sending slightly different frequencies into each ear
  • Choose a quiet environment where you won’t be interrupted for at least 20–30 minutes
  • Lie flat on your back and loosen any tight clothing
  • Start with theta-wave binaural beats (commonly associated with deep relaxation and dreamlike states)
  • Close your eyes and focus on the sound itself instead of trying to “make something happen”

The key is passive awareness. Don’t force visuals. Don’t chase an experience. Just observe.

As your body relaxes, you may notice:

  • heaviness in the limbs
  • tingling sensations
  • flashes of imagery
  • vibrations
  • the feeling that your body is larger, lighter, or drifting

A common mistake is getting excited the moment something unusual happens. That excitement often pulls people back into ordinary awareness immediately.

The goal isn’t intensity. It’s staying calm enough to let the state deepen naturally.

Not everyone experiences dramatic effects — but the relaxation state itself is very real. And from here, the mind becomes much more receptive to the next two methods.

2. Deep Body Sleep, Awake Mind — the Astral Travel Method

One of the central ideas explored in these programs was reaching a state where the body falls asleep while awareness remains awake.

This is sometimes described as the “threshold state” between waking consciousness and dreaming — and many people who report out-of-body experiences describe entering through this exact state.

How to try it:

  • Practice at night or early morning when your body is already tired
  • Lie in a comfortable position you can stay in without moving
  • Close your eyes and begin progressively relaxing each part of the body
  • Let your breathing become slow and automatic

The trick is to become deeply relaxed without mentally drifting completely asleep.

Instead of concentrating hard, keep your awareness soft and light:

  • focus on your breath
  • watch the darkness behind your eyes
  • or gently visualize a simple object or location

At a certain point, the body may begin entering sleep paralysis — a completely natural sleep state where the body becomes immobile while awareness remains present.

This can feel strange at first.

People often report:

  • buzzing sensations
  • vibrations
  • pressure in the chest
  • rapid imagery
  • floating sensations
  • hearing sounds or voices as dream states begin blending into awareness

The instinct is usually to panic or move immediately.

But according to many practitioners, staying calm is the entire key.

Whether you interpret the experience psychologically or spiritually, the state itself can feel incredibly vivid and profound.

3. Visualization & “Targeting” — Remote Viewing Basics

In programs like Stargate, participants were trained to gather impressions about distant or unseen targets without physically observing them.

The process wasn’t about “trying harder.” In fact, overthinking was considered one of the biggest sources of interference.

The goal was to notice subtle impressions before the logical mind began turning them into stories.

How to try it:

  • Ask a friend to secretly choose a location, photograph, object, or landmark
  • The less information you know beforehand, the better
  • Sit somewhere quiet with a notebook nearby
  • Close your eyes and take a few slow breaths until your mind settles

Then ask internally:

“What impressions come up when I focus on this target?”

Don’t analyze. Just record.

Write down the very first things that appear in your awareness, even if they seem random or nonsensical:

  • colors
  • temperatures
  • textures
  • shapes
  • emotions
  • movements
  • words
  • flashes of imagery

The important part is speed.

In many remote viewing experiments, practitioners believed the first impression was often the clearest — before the analytical mind stepped in and started guessing.

Afterward, compare your notes with the actual target.

Sometimes the results are vague. Sometimes oddly specific patterns emerge.

Even if nothing extraordinary happens when you try these techniques, maybe the point was never the result… but the realization, that your mind is far more flexible than you were ever taught.

And once you see that, it’s hard to go back.

Let me know if you have any thoughts or experience with these techniques and how they worked for you.
